Pinpoint Test F: DTC C1222 - Wheel Speed Mismatch/ DTC C1296 (LF), DTC C1297 (RF), DTC C1298 (RR), DTC C1299 - Wheel Speed Signal Fault

CAUTION: Use the flex probe kit for all test connections to prevent damage to the wiring terminals. Do not use standard multimeter probes.
  1. F1 CHECK FOR DTCs 
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Retrieve the ABS module DTCs.
    • Are DTCs C1145, C1155, C1165 or C1175 present? 
    1. YES  : Go to Pinpoint Test E .
    2. NO  : If DTC C1222 is present, go to  F3.

      If DTC C1296, C1297, C1298 or C1299 are present, go to  F2.

  2. F2 CHECK THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR OUTPUT 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Suspect Wheel Speed Sensor
    • Fig 1: Connecting Fused Jumper Wire

      NOTE: LF, RF and LR wheel speed sensor electrical connectors shown, RR similar.
    • If DTC C1296, connect a fused (5A) jumper wire between LF wheel speed sensor C150-1, circuit 521 (TN/OG), harness side and component side. Connect the automotive meter between C150-2, circuit 522 (TN/BK), harness side and component side.
    • If DTC C1297, connect a fused (5A) jumper wire between RF wheel speed sensor C160-1, circuit 514 (YE/RD), harness side and component side. Connect the automotive meter between C160-2, circuit 516 (YE/BK), harness side and component side.
    • If DTC C1298, connect a fused (5A) jumper wire between RR wheel speed sensor C462-2, circuit 523 (RD/PK), harness side and component side. Connect the automotive meter between C462-1, circuit 524 (PK/BK), harness side and component side.
    • If DTC C1299, connect a fused (5A) jumper wire between LR wheel speed sensor C440-1, circuit 518 (LG/RD), harness side and component side. Connect the automotive meter between C440-2, circuit 519 (LG/BK), harness side and component side.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the current while slowly spinning the wheel.
    • Does the automotive meter switch between 6.3mA and 15.4mA? 
    1. YES  : Go to  F4.
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new wheel speed sensor, REFER to Wheel Speed Sensor - Front  or to Wheel Speed Sensor - Rear . CLEAR the DTCs. TURN the ignition switch from OFF to ON. REPEAT the ABS self-test. If any DTCs are retrieved, REFER to ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX . If no DTCs are retrieved, CARRY OUT a drive test above 15 km/h (9 mph), then REFER to the Symptom Chart . TEST the system for normal operation.
  3. F3 CHECK VEHICLE COMPONENTS 
    NOTE: Any other wheel speed DTC must be diagnosed before proceeding. This DTC C1222 can be set during certain repair procedures with key ON, vehicle towing, on vehicle wheel balance or dynamometer testing with no actual fault.
    • Check for correct wheel and tire size, front to rear and side to side.
    • Check for excessive bearing end play.
    • Check the wheel speed sensor indicator for a bent sensor ring or missing teeth.
    • Are all the conditions OK? 
    1. YES  : Go to  F4.
    2. NO  : REPAIR as necessary. CLEAR the DTCs. TURN the ignition switch from OFF to ON. REPEAT the ABS self-test. If any DTCs are retrieved, REFER to the ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX . If no DTCs are retrieved, CARRY OUT a drive test above 15 km/h (9 mph), then REFER to the Symptom Chart .
  4. F4 CHECK FOR CORRECT ABS MODULE OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all ABS connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion.
      • pushed-out pins.
      • spread terminals.
    • Connect all ABS connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new ABS module. REFER to Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Module . TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. TURN the ignition switch from OFF to ON. REPEAT the ABS self-test. If any DTCs are retrieved, REFER to the ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX . If no DTCs are retrieved, CARRY OUT a drive test above 15 km/h (9 mph), then REFER to the Symptom Chart .
