Pinpoint Test H: DTC C1285 - Booster Solenoid Circuit Failure
CAUTION:
Use the Flex Probe Kit for all test connections to prevent damage to the wiring terminals. Do not use standard multimeter probes.
- H1 CARRY OUT THE RECALIBRATION PROCEDURE
- Key in ON position.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Clear the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)
- Carry out the ABS active brake booster recalibration procedure using the scan tool.
- Test drive the vehicle.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Retrieve the DTCs
- Are any ABS DTCs retrieved or does the recalibration procedure indicate a fault?
- YES
: If DTC C1285 is retrieved, or the brake booster portion of the recalibration procedure indicates a failure, go to H2 .
If any other DTC is retrieved, go to the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Module Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index.
- NO : The ABS system is operating correctly.
- H2 CHECK THE BRAKE BOOSTER SOLENOID
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: Active Brake Booster C149
- Measure the resistance between active brake booster C149-3, circuit 1583 (BN/WH), component side and active brake booster C149-4, circuit 1582 (LG/RD), component side.
- Is the resistance between 1 and 2 ohms?
- YES : Go to H3.
- NO : INSTALL a new active brake booster. REFER to POWER BRAKE ACTUATION article. CLEAR the DTCs. RECALIBRATE the ABS module. FOLLOW the scan tool directions for the calibration procedure. REPEAT the self-test.
- H3 CHECK CIRCUIT 1582 (LG/RD) AND CIRCUIT 1583 (BN/WH) FOR AN OPEN
- Measure the resistance between:
- ABS module C155-15, circuit 1582 (LG/RD), harness side and active brake booster C149-4, circuit 1582 (LG/RD), harness side.
- ABS module C155-29, circuit 1583 (BN/WH), harness side and active brake booster C149-3, circuit 1583 (BN/WH), harness side.
- Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?
- YES : Go to H4.
- NO : REPAIR the affected circuit(s). CLEAR the DTCs. RECALIBRATE the ABS module. FOLLOW the scan tool directions for the calibration procedure. REPEAT the self-test.
- Measure the resistance between:
- H4 CHECK CIRCUIT 1582 (LG/RD) AND CIRCUIT 1583 (BN/WH) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Measure the resistance between ground and:
- active brake booster C149-4, circuit 1582 (LG/RD), harness side.
- active brake booster C149-3, circuit 1583 (BN/WH), harness side.
- Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms?
- YES : Go to H5.
- NO : REPAIR the affected circuit(s). CLEAR the DTCs. RECALIBRATE the ABS module. FOLLOW the scan tool directions for the calibration procedure. REPEAT the self-test.
- Measure the resistance between ground and:
- H5 CHECK CIRCUIT 1583 (BN/WH) FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Key in ON position.
- Measure the voltage between active brake booster C149-3, circuit 1583 (BN/WH), harness side and ground.
- Is any voltage present?
- YES : REPAIR circuit 1583 (BN/WH). CLEAR the DTCs. RECALIBRATE the ABS module. FOLLOW the scan tool directions for the calibration procedure. REPEAT the self-test.
- NO : Go to H6.
- H6 CHECK THE ACTIVE BRAKE BOOSTER SOLENOID FOR CORRECT OPERATION
- Connect: Active Brake Booster C149
- Connect: ABS Module C155
- Start the engine and wait a few minutes to create vacuum in the brake booster and then place the ignition switch in the OFF position.
- Disconnect: ABS Module C155
- Connect a fused (10A) jumper wire between ABS module C155-29, circuit 1583 (BN/WH), harness side and ground.
- Connect a fused (10A) jumper wire for several seconds between the ABS module C155-15, circuit 1582 (LG/RD), harness side and the positive battery post, while observing the brake pedal for movement.
- Does the brake pedal move?
- YES : Go to H7.
- NO : INSTALL a new active brake booster. REFER to POWER BRAKE ACTUATION article. CLEAR the DTCs. RECALIBRATE the ABS module. REPEAT the self-test.
- H7 CHECK FOR CORRECT ABS MODULE OPERATION
- Disconnect the ABS connector.
- Check for:
- corrosion.
- pushed-out pins.
- spread terminals.
- Connect the ABS connector and make sure it seats correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
- YES : INSTALL a new ABS module. REFER to Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Module . TEST the system for normal operation.
- NO : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
