Inspection and Verification: Notes

Verify the customer concern.

Visually inspect the following for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage.

If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.

NOTE: Make sure to use the latest scan tool software release.

If the cause is not visually evident, connect the scan tool to the data link connector (DLC).

NOTE: The vehicle communication module (VCM) LED prove-out confirms power and ground from the DLC are provided to the VCM.

If the scan tool does not communicate with the VCM:
- Check the VCM connection to the vehicle.
- Check the scan tool connection to the VCM.
- Refer to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK article, No Power To The Scan Tool, to diagnose no communication with the scan tool.
If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle:
- Verify the ignition key is in the ON position.
- Verify the scan tool operation with a known good vehicle.
- Refer to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK article to diagnose no response from the powertrain control module (PCM).
Carry out the network test:
- If the scan tool responds with no communication for one or more modules, refer to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK article.
- If the network test passes, retrieve and record the continuous memory DTCs.
Clear the continuous DTCs and carry out the self-test diagnostics for the SJB, RCM and PCM.
If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the Instrument Cluster Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index, the Smart Junction Box (SJB) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index, the Restraints Control Module (RCM) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index, or the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index.
If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, go to Symptom Chart .

B1342	ECU is Faulted	INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to Instrument Cluster . TEST the system for normal operation.
B2143	NVM Memory Failure	INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to Instrument Cluster . TEST the system for normal operation.
C1093	Traction Control Disable Switch Circuit Failure	REFER to VEHICLE DYNAMIC SYSTEMS article.
U1051	SCP (J1850) Invalid or Missing Data for Brakes	REPAIR all other DTCs first. CLEAR the continuous DTCs and CARRY OUT the self-test diagnostics for the instrument cluster. If the DTC is still present, go to Pinpoint Test K .
U1135	SCP (J1850) Invalid or Missing Data for Ignition Switch/Starter	REPAIR all other DTCs first. CLEAR the continuous DTCs and CARRY OUT the self-test diagnostics for the instrument cluster. If the DTC is still present, go to Pinpoint Test Y .
U1900	CAN Communication Bus Fault - Receive Error	REFER to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK article.
U2023	Fault Received from External Mode	RETRIEVE the ABS module and the PCM DTCs. If ABS module DTCs are present, go to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES article. If no ABS module DTCs are present, REPAIR all other DTCs first. CLEAR the continuous DTCs and CARRY OUT the self-test diagnostics for the instrument cluster. If the DTC is still present, INSTALL a new ABS module. REFER to VEHICLE DYNAMIC SYSTEMS article. If PCM DTCs are present, REFER to the Introduction - Gasoline Engines article. If no PCM DTCs are present, REPAIR all other DTCs first. CLEAR the continuous DTCs and CARRY OUT the self-test diagnostics for the instrument cluster. If the DTC is still present, INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS article.
U2050 (This will only occur if the cluster is reflashed in the field/service and the attempt to do so has failed).	No Application Present	REFLASH the instrument cluster. If the DTC occurs after a software reflash, REFLASH the instrument cluster again. If the DTC reappears after each attempt to reflash, INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION . The odometer needs to be updated to reflect that of the one that was removed. This can only be done at an authorized instrument cluster service center (not by reflashing).
