Engine Front Cover: Removal

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING AND LIFTING .
  2. Drain the engine oil.
  3. Remove the engine cooling fan. For additional information, refer to COOLING FAN -- BLADE, CLUTCH AND SHROUD .
  4. Remove the RH valve cover. For additional information, refer to VALVE COVER - RH .
  5. Remove the LH valve cover. For additional information, refer to VALVE COVER - LH .
  6. Rotate the tensioner clockwise and remove the accessory drive belt.

  7. Remove the nut and the starter wiring harness support bracket.

  8. Remove the bolt and the accessory drive idler pulley.
  9. Remove the 3 bolts and the accessory drive belt tensioner.
  10. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt and washer.
    • Discard the crankshaft pulley bolt.
  11. Using the special tool, remove the crankshaft pulley.

  12. Using the special tool, remove the crankshaft front seal.

  13. Remove the 3 bolts and position the power steering pump assembly aside.
    14. NOTE: LH shown, RH similar.

  14. Disconnect the 2 radio ignition interference capacitor electrical connectors.
  15. Remove the 2 nuts and the RH and LH radio ignition interference capacitors.
  16. Disconnect the RH camshaft position (CMP) sensor electrical connector.

  17. Remove the bolt and the RH CMP sensor.
    • Discard the O-ring seal.
  18. Disconnect the LH CMP sensor electrical connector.

  19. Remove the bolt and the LH CMP sensor.
    • Discard the O-ring seal.
  20. Remove the 4 bolts and the coolant pump pulley.
  21. Remove the 2 nuts and the air cleaner outlet tube support bracket.

  22. Remove the 3 bolts and position the A/C compressor aside.

  23. Disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector.
  24. Remove the bolt and the CKP sensor.
    • Discard the O-ring seal.
  25. Remove the 4 front oil pan bolts.
  26. Remove the bolts and the studs.

    27. CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of old sealant.
  27. Remove the engine front cover from the front cover to cylinder block dowel.
    • Remove the engine front cover gaskets.
    • Clean the mating surfaces with silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging.
    • Inspect the mating surfaces.
