Pinpoint Test A: The Daytime Running Lamps (DRL) Are Inoperative

  1. A1 CHECK THE LOW BEAM HEADLAMPS 
    NOTE: Make sure the multifunction switch is in the LOW BEAM position.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Place the headlamp switch in the HEADLAMPS ON position.
    • Do the low beams illuminate? 

    Yes  : For early build vehicles, GO to  A2.

    For late build vehicles, GO to  A8.

    No  : REFER to EXTERIOR LIGHTING to continue diagnosis of the headlamps.

  2. A2 CHECK CIRCUIT 30-LE7 (RD/BU) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Place the headlamp switch in the OFF position.
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: DRL Relay C1000.
    • Measure the voltage between the DRL relay C1000-3, circuit 30-LE7 (RD/BU), harness side and ground.

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 

    Yes  : GO to  A3.

    No  : VERIFY the BJB fuse 22 (20A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.

  3. A3 CHECK THE DRL RELAY (EARLY BUILD) 
    • Carry out the DRL relay component test. Refer to MINI ISO RELAY for component testing.
    • Is the relay OK? 

    Yes  : GO to  A4.

    No  : INSTALL a new DRL relay. TEST the system for normal operation.

  4. A4 CHECK THE DRL RESISTOR WIRE 
    • Connect a fused (20A) jumper wire between the DRL relay C1000-3, circuit 30-LE7 (RD/BU), harness side and the DRL relay C1000-5, circuit 15S-LE8 (GN/RD), harness side.

    • Do the headlamps illuminate? 

    Yes  : REMOVE the jumper wire. GO to  A6.

    No  : REMOVE the jumper wire. GO to  A5.

  5. A5 CHECK THE LOW BEAM RELAY (EARLY BUILD) 
    • Disconnect: Low Beam Relay C1049.
    • Carry out the low beam relay component test. Refer to MINI ISO RELAY for component testing.
    • Is the low beam relay OK? 

    Yes  : REPAIR circuit 15S-LE8 (GN/RD) (DRL resistor wire). TEST the system for normal operation.

    No  : INSTALL a new low beam relay. TEST the system for normal operation.

  6. A6 CHECK CIRCUIT 91-LE6 (BK/RD) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Measure the resistance between the DRL relay C1000-2, circuit 91-LE6 (BK/RD), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes  : GO to  A7.

    No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.

  7. A7 CHECK CIRCUIT 15S-LE6 (GN/YE) FOR AN OPEN (EARLY BUILD) 
    • Connect: DRL Relay C1000.
    • Disconnect: Headlamp Switch C205.
    • Connect a fused (5A) jumper wire between the headlamp switch C205-8, circuit 15-LE29 (GN/BK), harness side and the headlamp switch C205-4, circuit 15S-LE6 (GN/YE), harness side.

    • Key in ON position.
    • Do the headlamps illuminate with reduced intensity? 

    Yes  : INSTALL a new headlamp switch. REFER to EXTERIOR LIGHTING . TEST the system for normal operation.

    No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.

  8. A8 CHECK THE DRL RELAY (LATE BUILD) 
    NOTE: If there are multiple inoperative systems with the ignition switch in the RUN position, refer to STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES to continue diagnosis.
    • Place the headlamp switch in the OFF position.
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: DRL Relay C2073.
    • Carry out the DRL relay component test. Refer to MINI ISO RELAY for component testing.
    • Is the relay OK? 

    Yes  : GO to  A9.

    No  : INSTALL a new DRL relay. TEST the system for normal operation.

  9. A9 CHECK THE DRL RELAY COIL GROUND CIRCUIT 
    • Measure the resistance between the DRL relay C2073-85, circuit 31-DA1 (BK), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes  : GO to  A11.

    No  : GO to  A10.

  10. A10 CHECK CIRCUIT 31-DA1 (BK) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Disconnect: CJB C270c.
    • Measure the resistance between the CJB C270c-4, circuit 31-DA1 (BK), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes  : INSTALL a new CJB. TEST the system for normal operation.

    No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.

  11. A11 CHECK FOR SUPPLY VOLTAGE TO THE DRL RELAY 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the DRL relay C2073-30, harness side and ground.

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 

    Yes  : GO to  A12.

    No  : VERIFY the CJB fuse 44 (15A) is OK. If OK, INSTALL a new CJB. TEST the system for normal operation.

  12. A12 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE FROM THE HEADLAMP SWITCH 
    • Measure the voltage between the DRL relay C2073-86, circuit 15S-LE6 (GN/YE), harness side and ground.

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 

    Yes  : GO to  A15.

    No  : GO to  A13.

  13. A13 CHECK THE HEADLAMP SWITCH 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Connect: DRL Relay C2073.
    • Disconnect: Headlamp Switch C205.
    • Connect a fused (5A) jumper wire between the headlamp switch C205-8, circuit 15-LE29 (GN/BK), harness side and the headlamp switch C205-4, circuit 15S-LE6 (GN/YE), harness side.

    • Key in ON position.
    • Do the headlamps illuminate? 

    Yes  : INSTALL a new headlamp switch. REFER to EXTERIOR LIGHTING . TEST the system for normal operation.

    No  : LEAVE the jumper wire connected. GO to  A14.

  14. A14 CHECK CIRCUIT 15S-LE6 (GN/YE) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: CJB
    • Measure the voltage between the CJB C270b-7, circuit 15S-LE6 (GN/YE), harness side and ground.

    • Key in ON position.
    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 

    Yes  : INSTALL a new CJB. TEST the system for normal operation.

    No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.

  15. A15 CHECK THE LOW BEAM RELAY (LATE BUILD) 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Low Beam Relay C1049.
    • Carry out the low beam relay component test. Refer to MINI ISO RELAY for component testing.
    • Is the low beam relay OK? 

    Yes  : GO to  A16.

    No  : INSTALL a new low beam relay. TEST the system for normal operation.

  16. A16 CHECK CIRCUIT 15S-LE8 (GN/RD) FOR AN OPEN (LATE BUILD) 
    • Disconnect: CJB C270b.
    • Measure the resistance between the CJB C270b-4, circuit 15S-LE8 (GN/RD), harness side and the low beam relay C1049-4, circuit 15S-LE8 (GN/RD), harness side.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes  : INSTALL a new CJB. TEST the system for normal operation.

    No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
