Stabilizer Bar: Removal

  1. To prevent damage to the battery ground cable, disconnect the battery ground cable from the battery. For additional information, refer to BATTERY MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  2. Using a suitable steering wheel holding device, lock the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position.
  3. Remove and discard the steering column shaft bolt and disconnect the shaft from the steering gear pinion extension.
  4. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING AND LIFTING .
    5. CAUTION: Leave the tie-rod end nuts in place to protect the ball joint studs.
  5. Loosen the tie-rod end nuts.
    6. CAUTION: Protect the ball joint seal using a soft cloth to prevent damage.
  6. Using the special tool, detach the tie-rod ends from the wheel knuckles.
    • Discard the tie-rod end nuts.

  7. Remove and discard the stabilizer bar link lower nuts and detach the stabilizer bar links from the stabilizer bar.
    8. CAUTION: Do not use a prying device or separator fork between the ball joint and the wheel knuckle. Damage to the ball joint or ball joint boot can result. Only use the pry bar by inserting it into the lower control arm body opening.
    CAUTION: Do not damage suspension components when using the pry bar to separate the lower arm from the wheel knuckle.
  8. Remove and discard the ball joint pinch nut and bolt, then insert a pry bar in the lower arm body opening and separate the lower arm from the wheel knuckle.
    • Remove the ball joint heat shield.

  9. After separating the lower control arm from the wheel knuckle, immediately install the special tool over the ball stud before releasing the lower control arm and knuckle into rest positions.
    • Leave the special tool in place during service and only remove prior to installation.

  10. Remove the transaxle RH support insulator bolt.
  11. Using a suitable transmission jack, support the subframe.
  12. Remove the 6 subframe bolts.
    13. CAUTION: The power steering lines are attached to the steering gear.

  13. Lower the subframe to gain access to the stabilizer bar.
  14. Remove the stabilizer bar bracket bolts, brackets and the stabilizer bar.
    • Discard the bolts.
  15. Remove the stabilizer bar bushings.
