Inspection and Verification

  1. Verify the customer concern by checking the air bag indicator in the instrument cluster. Refer to PROVE OUT THE SYSTEM  in this article.
  2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage using the following chart.
    VISUAL INSPECTION CHART

    Mechanical Electrical
    • Damaged restraints control module (RCM) or loose mounting
    • Damaged front impact severity sensor or loose mounting
    • Damaged side impact sensor or loose mounting
    • Damaged OCS system components
    • Open central junction box (CJB) fuse(s):
      • 60 (7.5A)
      • 51 (7.5 A)
    • Damaged wiring harness
    • Loose, damaged or corroded connectors
    • Circuitry open/shorted
    • Damaged shorting bars
  3. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
  4. If the cause is not visually evident, connect the scan tool to the data link connector and select the vehicle to be tested from the scan tool menu.

If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle:

    • check that the program card is correctly installed.
    • check that the latest scan tool software release is being used.
    • check the connections to the vehicle.
    • check the ignition switch position.
  5. If the scan tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the scan tool operating manual.
  6. Carry out the scan tool data link test. If the diagnostic tool responds with:
    • HS-CAN circuit fault; all electronic control units no response/not equipped, refer to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK .
    • no response/not equipped for restraints control module (RCM), GO to SYMPTOM CHART .
    • system passed, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and carry out the on demand self test diagnostics for the RCM.
  7. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) .
  8. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, GO to SYMPTOM CHART .
