NOTE:
Carry out the transmission fluid cooler backflushing and cleaning if the transaxle is being overhauled or if installing a new or remanufactured transaxle. For additional information, refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Backflushing and Cleaning .

All vehicles
- Lubricate the torque converter pilot hub with grease.
- Install the special tool.
- Position the transaxle in place.
- Once the transaxle is in place, before bolting it to the engine, remove the special tool.
- Move the transaxle assembly toward the engine assembly and install the bolt.
- Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
- Install the 2 nuts and the stud.
- Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
- Install the lower transaxle bolts.
- Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
- Install the lower rear mount bracket.
- Tighten to 55 Nm (41 lb-ft).
- Loosely install the lower support insulator through bolt.
- Install the LH transaxle mount through bolt.
- Tighten the lower support insulator through bolt.
- Tighten to 115 Nm (85 lb-ft).
- Install the transmission fluid cooler tube.
- Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
- Install the transmission fluid cooler tube.
- Install the fluid cooler tube.
- Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
- Install the transmission fluid cooler tube bolt.
- Tighten to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft).
- Install the fluid cooler tube.
- Install the output shaft speed (OSS) sensor and the bolt.
- Tighten to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft).
- Connect the OSS speed sensor and the turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor electrical connectors and connect the wiring harness fasteners.
- Install 4 new torque converter nuts.
- Tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).
- Install the access cover.
- Position the power transfer unit (PTU) in place and install the bolt.
- Tighten to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft).
- Install the PTU-to-transaxle bolts.
- Tighten to 70 Nm (52 lb-ft).
- Connect the electrical connector fasteners to the lower mount bracket.
- Position the cross brace in place and install the nut.
- Tighten to 175 Nm (129 lb-ft).
- Install the 2 bolts for the cross brace.
- Tighten to 90 Nm (66 lb-ft).
- Install the lower front insulator bolt for the mount.
- Tighten to 103 Nm (76 lb-ft).
- Install the PTU support bracket.
- Tighten to 55 Nm (41 lb-ft).
- Install the RH catalytic converter. For additional information, refer to EXHAUST SYSTEM article.
- Position the driveshaft in place and install the nuts.
- Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
- Connect the rear driveshaft to the PTU. Install the PTU bolts.
- Tighten to 37 Nm (27 lb-ft).
- Install the Y-pipe and connect the exhaust pipe flange.
- Tighten to 29 Nm (21 lb-ft).
- Connect the front flange.
- Tighten to 29 Nm (21 lb-ft).
- Install the exhaust pipe.
- Install the rubber hanger.
- Install the exhaust pipe and install the bolts.
- Tighten to 29 Nm (21 lb-ft).
- Install the rear cross brace and 4 bolts.
- Tighten to 115 Nm (85 lb-ft).
- Install the intermediate shaft.
- Install the intermediate shaft retaining nuts.
- Tighten to 27 Nm (20 lb-ft).
- Connect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) wire to the oil pan bolt studs and connect the connector.
- Install the LH halfshaft into the transaxle and the RH halfshafts in the intermediate shaft and install the ball joints in the knuckles.
- Install the LH brake hose retainer and the ABS sensor bolt.
- Tighten to 15 Nm (11 lb-ft).
- Install the RH brake hose retainer and the ABS sensor bolt.
- Tighten to 15 Nm (11 lb-ft).
- Connect the LH suspension.
- Install the lower ball joint-to-knuckle bolt.
- Tighten to 63 Nm (46 lb-ft).
- Install the tie-rod end retaining nut.
- Tighten to 55 Nm (41 lb-ft).
- Connect the stabilizer bar link.
- Tighten to 63 Nm (46 lb-ft).
- Install the lower ball joint-to-knuckle bolt.
- Connect the RH suspension.
- Install the lower ball joint-to-knuckle bolt.
- Tighten to 63 Nm (46 lb-ft).
- Install the tie-rod end retaining nut.
- Tighten to 55 Nm (41 lb-ft).
- Connect the stabilizer bar link.
- Tighten to 63 Nm (46 lb-ft).
- Install the lower ball joint-to-knuckle bolt.
- Install the LH splash shield, the retainer and the 5 bolts.
- Install the RH splash shield, the retainer and the 5 bolts.
- Install the front wheels and tires. For additional information, refer to WHEELS AND TIRES article.
- Using the special tools, lower the engine onto the RH engine mount.
- Install the bolt for the RH engine mount.
- Tighten to 120 Nm (89 lb-ft).
- Tighten the LH support insulator mount assembly.
- Tighten the 4 nuts for the bracket.
- Tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).
- Tighten the through bolt.
- Tighten to 103 Nm (76 lb-ft).
- Tighten the 4 nuts for the bracket.
- Install the 4 upper transaxle retaining bolts.
- Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
- Remove the special tools.
- Remove the special tools.
- Remove the special tools.
- Remove the special tool.
- Connect the electrical connectors together and then connect them to the upper intake manifold.
- Install the starter motor and install the bolts.
- Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
- Install the ground cable.
- Tighten to 27 Nm (20 lb-ft).
- Install the starter motor solenoid harness connector.
- Install the starter motor solenoid battery nut.
- Tighten to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft).
- Install the starter motor solenoid nut.
- Tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb-in).
- Install the starter motor solenoid battery nut.
- Position the selector lever cable and bracket in place, install the bolts and install the wiring harness retainer.
- Tighten to 23 Nm (17 lb-ft).
- Connect the selector lever cable to the manual control lever.
- Install the selector lever cable retainer on the transmission fluid filler tube.
- Connect the wire harness to the battery hold-down bracket.
- Connect the evaporative emissions (EVAP) and PTU vent hose to the transmission filler tube bracket.
- Install the main control cover vent tube.
- Position the bracket in place and install the nut. Connect the transaxle harness connector.
- Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
- Connect the transmission range (TR) sensor.
- Using the special tool, align the digital TR sensor.
- Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- Install the air cleaner as an assembly.
- Install the air cleaner assembly.
- Connect the air intake tube.
- Install the retaining bolt.
- Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- Install the breather tube.
- Connect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor electrical connector.
- Install the battery tray. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES article.
- Fill the transaxle with clean transmission fluid.
- Verify that the selector lever cable is correctly adjusted. The vehicle should start in PARK and NEUTRAL and the reverse lamps should illuminate in REVERSE. For additional information, refer to AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION EXTERNAL CONTROLS - CD4E article.
- Check the transmission fluid level and correct as necessary.

If installing an exchange transaxle, the digital TR sensor must be aligned.
NOTE:
Before installing the battery tray, check the vent tube hose for any obstructions, kinks or incorrect routing position.
