Main Control Valve Body: Removal

All vehicles 

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING AND LIFTING article.
  2. 3.0L engine 

  3. Drain the engine coolant. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING article.
  4. All vehicles 

  5. Remove the breather tube and disconnect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor electrical connector.

  7. Remove the intake tube and the air cleaner cover.

  9. Remove the battery and tray. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES article.
  10. Disconnect the wiring harness from the battery tray bracket.

  12. Remove the battery tray bracket.

  14. Disconnect the transaxle wiring harness electrical connector and the transmission range (TR) sensor electrical connector.

  16. Disconnect the selector lever cable.

  18. Remove the selector lever cable and bracket and position it aside.

  20. Remove the vent tube hose from the main control cover.

    3.0L engine 

  22. Remove the lower radiator hose and position aside.

  24. Remove the wire harness retainer from the front engine mount.
  25. All vehicles 

  26. Remove the transaxle drain plug and drain the transmission fluid.

  28. Remove the transmission fluid cooler tube bracket bolt.

  30. Remove the main control cover bolts, studs and the cover.

    NOTE: Do not discard the gasket. It is a reusable type. Inspect the gasket for damage. Install a new gasket as necessary.
  32. Remove the main control cover gasket.

  34. Remove the main control valve body bolts.

    NOTE: Do not damage the manual valve.
  36. Lift the main control valve body while disconnecting the manual valve link.

  38. Depress the retaining tabs and push the solenoid valve body electrical connector down through the transaxle case.

  40. Make sure the manual valve does not fall out of the main control valve body while removing from the vehicle.
