Pinpoint Test C: The Speedometer/Odometer Is Inoperative

  1. C1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM BOTH CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND PCM SELF-TESTS 
    • Check the recorded PCM DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-tests.
    • Are any PCM DTCs recorded? 
    1. YES  : REFER to INTRODUCTION - GASOLINE ENGINES or INTRODUCTION -- HYBRID ENGINES article.
    2. NO  : Go to  C2.
  2. C2 CARRY OUT THE SPEEDOMETER ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Instrument Cluster Active Command
    • Select the instrument cluster speedometer active command. Select the speedometer and scroll in increments of 10% while monitoring the speedometer. The speed indicated should increase in increments of approximately 20 km/h (12 mph) for each 10% change.
    • Does the speed indicated increase within specifications? 
    1. YES  : Go to  C3.
    2. NO  : Go to  C4.
  3. C3 MONITOR THE VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR (VSS) PID 
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: PCM PID (Escape, Mariner) or TCM PID (Hybrid)
    • Monitor the vehicle speed PID, VSS (Escape, Mariner) or VSS_TCM (Hybrid), while driving the vehicle.
    • Does the PCM vehicle speed PID (Escape, Mariner) or TCM (Hybrid) vehicle speed PID match the speedometer reading on the instrument cluster? 
    1. YES  : Go to  C4.
    2. NO  : For Escape, Mariner, go to  C5 .

      For Hybrid, go to  C6 .

  4. C4 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION 
    • Disconnect the instrument cluster connector.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • damaged pins
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect the instrument cluster connector and make sure it seats correctly.
    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to Instrument Cluster . TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
  5. C5 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all the PCM connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • damaged pins
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - 2.3L article. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
  6. C6 CHECK FOR CORRECT TCM OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all the TCM connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • damaged pins
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect all the TCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new TCM. REFER to AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION - ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION (ECVT) article. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
