Removal and Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Mercury Montego, 2006 Ford Freestyle, and 2006 Ford Five Hundred. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: All safety belt assemblies including retractors, buckles, front seat belt buckle support assemblies (slide bar), if equipped, shoulder belt height adjusters, if equipped, child safety seat tether bracket assemblies, if equipped, and attaching hardware should be inspected after any collision. All belt assemblies should be replaced unless a qualified technician finds the assemblies show no damage and operate properly. Belt assemblies not in use during a collision should also be inspected and replaced if either damage or improper operation is noted. The Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR) feature of the safety belt retractor must be checked by a qualified technician to verify that the ALR feature for a child seat is functioning properly, in addition to the other checks for proper safety belt system function. A belt and retractor assembly must be replaced if the safety belt assembly's "automatic locking retractor" feature or any other safety belt function is not operating properly when inspected according to the functional inspection procedures in the workshop manual. Failure to replace the belt and retractor assembly could increase the risk of injury in collisions.
NOTE:
  1. Vehicle with auxiliary climate control shown, vehicle without auxiliary climate control similar.
  2. LH side shown, RH side similar.

    All retractors 

  1. Remove the rear quarter trim panel. For additional information, refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

    2. Second row outboard retractor 

  2. Remove the safety belt anchor bolt.
    • To install, tighten to 40 N.m (30 lb-ft).
  3. Remove the C-pillar trim panel from the safety belt.
  4. Remove the safety belt D-ring bolt.
    • To install, tighten to 48 N.m (35 lb-ft).

    5. Second row outboard retractor with auxiliary climate control 

  5. From beneath the LH rear side of the vehicle remove the 2 auxiliary climate control floor pan bracket nuts.
    • To install, tighten to 6 N.m (53 lb-in).

  6. Remove the 2 auxiliary climate control duct pin-type retainers and detach the auxiliary climate control ducts.
  7. Remove the 3 auxiliary climate control housing bolts.
    • To install, tighten to 6 N.m (53 lb-in).
    8. CAUTION: Use extreme caution when handling the auxiliary climate control unit to prevent damage to the refrigerant lines.
  8. Carefully position aside the auxiliary A/C unit. Second row outboard retractor 
  9. Remove the bolt and safety belt retractor.
    • To install, tighten to 48 N.m (35 lb-ft).

    10. Third row retractor 

  10. Remove the D-pillar trim panel from the safety belt.
  11. Remove the safety belt D-ring bolt.
    • To install, tighten to 48 N.m (35 lb-ft).
  12. Remove the secondary safety belt guide from the D-pillar.
  13. Remove the bolt and safety belt retractor.
    • To install, tighten to 48 N.m (35 lb-ft).

    14. All retractors 

    NOTE:
    1. Make sure the safety belt webbing is not twisted prior to installation.
    2. The web loop portion of the anchor must face outboard of the vehicle.
  14. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  15. Check the active restraint system for correct operation. For additional information, refer to SAFETY BELT SYSTEM .
