Removal and Installation

NOTE:
New Teflon® seals must be installed any time the power steering line fittings are disconnected.
- Remove the engine air cleaner. For additional information, refer to INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING .
- Remove the air cleaner intake pipe. For additional information, refer to INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING .
- Loosen the clamps and remove the duct.
- To install, tighten to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft).
All vehicles
- Disconnect the steering gear coupling shield from the line fittings and slide the shield upward on the intermediate shaft.
- Remove the intermediate shaft-to-steering gear bolt.
- To install, tighten to 48 Nm (36 lb-ft).
NOTE: New Teflon® seals must be installed any time the power steering line fittings are disconnected. - Disconnect the power steering lines.
- Discard the Teflon® seals.
- To install, tighten to 35 Nm (26 lb-ft).
- Discard the Teflon® seals.
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
- Remove the cotter pin retainer cap and the drag link-to-sector shaft nut.
- Remove and discard the cotter pin.
- Remove the sector shaft nut.
- To install, tighten to 200 Nm (148 lb-ft).
- Using the special tool, disconnect the drag link from the sector shaft arm.
- Remove the 3 bolts and the steering gear.
- Discard the bolts.
- To install, tighten to 150 Nm (111 lb-ft).
- Remove the 3 bolts and the steering gear.
- Discard the bolts.
- To install, tighten to 300 Nm (221 lb-ft).
- Remove the sector shaft arm-to-sector shaft nut.
- Discard the nut.
- To install, tighten to 475 Nm (350 lb-ft).
- Using the special tool, remove the sector shaft arm.
- Using the special tool and 2 grade 8 bolts, 90 mm (3.54 in), separate the sector shaft arm from the steering gear.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- Using the special tool, install 2 new Teflon® seals on the power steering line fittings.
- Fill the power steering system. For additional information, refer to STEERING SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
Vehicles equipped with 6.8L gas or 6.0L diesel engines
Vehicles equipped with 5.4L engines
Vehicles equipped with 6.0L diesel engine
NOTE:
If there is any oil residue, clean both connecting ports and the inside surface of the charge air cooler duct to prevent the duct from blowing off.

F-250, F-350 vehicles
NOTE:
The steering gear bolts have a dry adhesive on the threads. The bolts must not be reused.
F-450, F-550 vehicles
NOTE:
The steering gear bolts have a dry adhesive on the threads. The bolts must not be reused.
All vehicles
NOTE:
The sector shaft arm-to-sector shaft nut has a dry adhesive on the threads. The nut must not be reused.
F-250, F-350 vehicles
F-450, F-550 vehicles

CAUTION:
During installation, do not overtighten the fittings.
