Starter Motor - Drive Pinion Test

  1. Rotate the pinion drive clockwise and counterclockwise.
  2. The pinion drive should freewheel in one direction and lock to the armature shaft in the other.
  3. If the pinion drive freewheels in both directions, install a new starter motor.
