Removal and Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Ford Pickup, 2006 Ford F550 Super Duty, 2006 Ford F450 Super Duty, and 2006 Ford Cab & Chassis. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Install a new steering gear sector shaft arm if it is bent. If the steering gear sector shaft arm is bent, check the rest of the steering linkage for damage. If steering linkage parts are damaged, install new as required. Do not attempt to straighten the steering gear sector shaft arm or any other steering linkage components.

    All vehicles 

  1. Place the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position.
  2. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .

    F250, F350, 4x4 and F450, F550 vehicles 

    NOTE: To prevent the front suspension from shifting when the track bar is removed, the front suspension must be supporting the vehicle weight.
  3. Position the jack stand under the front axle assembly.
  4. Lower the vehicle until the front suspension is supporting the vehicle weight.

    5. All vehicles 

  5. Remove the cotter pin, retainer cap and the drag link-to-sector shaft arm nut.
    • Discard the cotter pin.
    • To install, tighten to 200 Nm (148 lb-ft).
  6. Using the special tool, separate the drag link from the sector shaft arm.

    7. F250, F350, 4x4 and F450, F550 vehicles 

  7. Remove the 2 track bar bracket-to-frame bolts.
    • To install, tighten to 175 Nm (129 lb-ft).
  8. Remove the 3 track bar bracket-to-frame nuts and position the track bar aside.
    • To install, tighten to 175 Nm (129 lb-ft).

    9. All vehicles 

    NOTE: The sector shaft arm nut has a dry adhesive on the threads. Do not reuse the sector shaft arm nut.
  9. Remove and discard the sector shaft arm nut.
    • To install, tighten to 475 Nm (350 lb-ft).

    10. F250 and F350 vehicles 

  10. Using the special tool, separate the sector shaft arm from the steering gear sector shaft.

    11. F450 and F550 vehicles 

  11. Using the special tool and 2 grade 8 bolts, 90 mm (3.54 in), separate the sector shaft arm from the steering gear.

    12. All vehicles 

    CAUTION: Make sure that the nut retainer cap is correctly positioned to allow for cotter pin installation. Do not tighten or loosen the nut to align the retainer cap with the cotter pin hole. Overtightening of the fasteners may result in premature failure of steering linkage components.
  12. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
