Pinpoint Test J: DTCS C2768, C2769, C2778, C2783. C1305, U1901 And U2527 - Sensor Cluster Circuit Fault

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Mercury Mariner and 2006 Ford Escape. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Use the correct probe adaptor(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adaptor(s) may damage the connector.
NOTE: The longitudinal accelerometer is integral to the sensor cluster. The sensor cluster is not repairable and must be installed as an assembly.
  1. J1 CARRY OUT THE RECALIBRATION PROCEDURE
NOTE: Make sure the vehicle is not on a hoist and is sitting on level ground before performing stability assist module calibration.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Connect the scan tool.
    • Clear the DTCs. Carry out the sensor cluster recalibration procedure using the diagnostic tool.
    • Retrieve the DTCs.
    • Are any DTCs retrieved or does the recalibration procedure indicate a fault?

    Yes:  GO to  J2.

No:  The ABS system is operating correctly. The condition may have been caused by an incomplete or inaccurate calibration.

  2. J2 CHECK THE SENSOR CLUSTER CIRCUITRY FOR AN OPEN
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: ABS Module C1462.
    • Disconnect: Sensor Cluster C2296.
    • Measure the resistance between ABS module D1462, harness side and the sensor cluster C2296, harness side as follows:
      ABS MODULE CONNECTOR-PIN REFERENCE

ABS Module Connector Pin Circuit Sensor Cluster Connector Pin Circuit
      C1462-39 1576 (TN/BK) C2296-3 1576 (TN/BK)

    • Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?

    Yes:  GO to  J3.

No:  REPAIR the circuit(s) in question. CLEAR the DTC(s). CALIBRATE the ABS module. FOLLOW the diagnostic tool directions for the calibration procedure. REPEAT the self-test.

  3. J3 CHECK THE SENSOR CLUSTER CIRCUITRY FOR A SHORT TO POWER
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the sensor cluster, harness side and ground as follows:
      SENSOR CLUSTER CONNECTOR PIN REFERENCE

      Sensor Cluster Connector Pin Circuit
      C2296-1 1815 (PK/LB)
      C2296-2 1814 (WH/LB)
      C2296-3 1576 (TN/BK)
      C2296-5 1575 (BK/WH)
Fig 2: Checking Sensor Cluster Circuitry For Short To Power

    • Is voltage present?

Yes:  REPAIR the circuit(s) in question. CLEAR the DTC(s). CALIBRATE the ABS module. FOLLOW the diagnostic tool directions for the calibration procedure. REPEAT the self-test.

    No:  GO to  J4.

  4. J4 CHECK THE SENSOR CLUSTER CIRCUITRY FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Measure the resistance between the sensor cluster, harness side and ground as follows:
      SENSOR CLUSTER CONNECTOR PIN REFERENCE

      Sensor Cluster Connector Pin Circuit
      C2296-1 1815 (PK/LB)
      C2296-2 1814 (WH/LB)
      C2296-3 1576 (TN/BK)
      C2296-5 1575 (BK/WH)
Fig 3: Checking Sensor Cluster Circuit For Short To Ground

    • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?

    Yes:  GO to  J5.

No:  REPAIR the circuit(s) in question. CLEAR the DTC(s). CALIBRATE the ABS module. FOLLOW the diagnostic tool directions for the calibration procedure. REPEAT the self-test.

  5. J5 CHECK THE ABS MODULE LONGITUDINAL ACCELERATION PID
NOTE: The vehicle must be on level ground, not on a hoist and at a complete standstill. Any vehicle movement will result in false values for this test.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: ABS Module PID.
    • Monitor the ABS module longitudinal acceleration PID.
    • Is the ABS module longitudinal acceleration PID value between -4 and +4?

    Yes:  GO to  J6.

No:  CHECK the mounting of the sensor cluster. If OK, INSTALL a new sensor cluster. REFER to ACCELEROMETER - HYBRID . CLEAR the DTC(s). CALIBRATE the ABS module. FOLLOW the diagnostic tool directions for the calibration procedure. REPEAT the self-test.

  6. J6 CHECK FOR ABS MODULE OPERATION
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: ABC Module C1462.
    • Disconnect: Sensor Cluster C2296.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion.
      • pushed-out pins.
      • damaged pins.
      • male-to-female harness pin alignment.
    • Connect: ABS Module C1462.
    • Connect: Sensor Cluster C2296.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present?

Yes:  INSTALL a new HCU. REFER to HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT (HCU) - HYBRID . TEST the system for normal operation.

No:  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTC(s). REPEAT the self-test.
