Service Bleed

WARNING: Use of any other than the approved DOT 3 brake fluid will cause permanent damage to brake components and will render the brakes inoperative. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

CAUTION: Do not allow the brake master cylinder reservoir to run dry during the bleeding operation. Keep the master cylinder reservoir filled with the specified brake fluid. Never reuse the brake fluid that has been drained from the hydraulic system.
CAUTION: Brake fluid is harmful to painted and plastic surfaces. If brake fluid is spilled onto a painted or plastic surface, immediately wash it with water.
CAUTION: Do not allow the master cylinder brake fluid to overflow from the reservoir. Brake fluid may damage the high-voltage components.
NOTE: Bleeding the hydraulic control unit (HCU) is required only when removing or installing the HCU, master cylinder, or opening the lines to the HCU.
NOTE: The ignition key must be in the ON position when checking the brake fluid level.
NOTE: Make sure that the brake fluid level is above the MIN mark.
    CAUTION: Do not apply pressure to the hydraulic brake system until prompted by the diagnostic tool.
  1. Connect the pressure bleeder to the vehicle.
    • Do not apply pressure to the hydraulic brake system at this time.

  2. Install rubber drain hoses to the brake bleeder screws and submerge the open ends of the hoses in clean brake fluid.
  3. NOTE: Carrying out the service bleed function drives trapped air from the HCU. Subsequent bleeding removes the air from the brake hydraulic system through the bleeder screws.
    NOTE: Adequate voltage to the HCU module is required during the system bleed.
  4. Connect the diagnostic tool.
  5. Using the pressure bleeder, apply 2 bars of pressure to the brake system.
  6. Access the service bleed function on the diagnostic tool.
  7. NOTE: The diagnostic tool indicates when the service bleed procedure is not followed correctly. Continue with the service bleed procedure after correcting the condition. Refer to the SERVICE BLEED ERROR CODES .
  8. While following the instructions on the diagnostic tool, apply the brake pedal 1 full stroke and then completely release the brake pedal.
    SERVICE BLEED ERROR CODES

    Code Display Action
    00 NO ERROR None
    01 BFLS (Brake Fluid Level Sensor) LOW Add brake fluid
    02 USER BREAK Do not press the brake pedal
    03 HPA (High Pressure Accumulator) LOADED Wait for accumulator to discharge
    04 STANDSTILL Block the vehicle from moving
    05 VOLTAGE LOW Start the engine or charge the battery
    06 FILL PRESSURE LOW Maintain brake bleeder pressure at 2 bars
    07 FILL PRESSURE NOT REMOVED Remove the pressure bleeder equipment
    08 WRONG BLEEDER Close the open bleeder and open the correct bleeder as instructed
    09 BLEEDER NOT OPEN Open the correct bleeder screw
    0A BLEEDER OPEN Close all open bleeder screws
    0B PEDAL FAST Press brake pedal more slowly
    0C PEDAL WEAK Press brake pedal more firmly
    0D IGNITION OFF Turn off the ignition
    0E FATAL ERROR HCU defect
  9. Continue to follow the instructions on the diagnostic tool to complete the service bleed procedure.
