Removal and Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis and 2006 Ford Crown Victoria. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Suspension fasteners are critical parts because they effect performance of vital components and systems and their failure can result in major service expense. A new part with the same part number or an equivalent part must be installed, if installation is necessary. Do not use a part of lesser quality or substitute design. Torque values must be used as specified during reassembly to make sure of correct retention of these parts.
    WARNING: The electrical power to the air suspension system must be turned off prior to hoisting, jacking or towing an air suspension vehicle. Failure to do so can result in unexpected inflation or deflation of the air springs, which can result in shifting of the vehicle during these operations. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
  1. If equipped, turn the air suspension service switch to the OFF position.
    2. WARNING: If equipped with fire suppression system, depower the system. For important safety warnings and procedures, refer to FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM .
  2. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
    3. WARNING: Do not remove the center nut. This nut holds the upper spring mount in place. If this nut is removed the spring tension will be released. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
  3. Remove and discard the 3 shock absorber mounting bracket nuts.
    • To install, tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).
    4. CAUTION: Do not allow the caliper and anchor plate assembly to hang from the brake hose or damage to the hose can occur.
  4. Remove the 2 bolts and position the caliper, pads and anchor plate assembly aside.
    • Support the caliper and anchor plate assembly using mechanic's wire.
    • To install, tighten to 160 Nm (118 lb-ft).
  5. Remove the brake disc.
    6. NOTE: The stabilizer bar links are under pressure when the suspension is in the REBOUND position.
  6. Using a suitable jack stand, raise the suspension arms until the pressure is released from the stabilizer bar links.
    7. NOTE: Use the hex holding feature to prevent the stud from turning while removing the nut.
  7. Remove and discard the upper stabilizer bar link nut.
    • To install, tighten to 63 Nm (46 lb-ft).
    8. NOTE: Use the hex holding feature to prevent the stud from turning while removing the nut.
  8. Remove the lower stabilizer bar link nut and the stabilizer bar link.
    • Discard the nut.
    • To install, tighten to 55 Nm (41 lb-ft).
  9. Detach the wheel speed sensor wiring harness retainer from the wheel knuckle.

    10. NOTE: Use the hex holding feature to prevent the stud from turning while removing the nut.
  10. Remove and discard the upper ball joint nut.
    • To install, tighten to 150 Nm (111 lb-ft).
  11. Remove the shock absorber and spring assembly lower nut and flag bolt.
    • Discard the nut.
    • To install, tighten to 235 Nm (173 lb-ft).
  12. Remove the shock absorber and spring assembly.
    13. WARNING: If equipped with fire suppression system, repower the system. For important safety warnings and procedures, refer to FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM .
    NOTE: Tighten all retainers that clamp a bushing, with the weight of the vehicle on the wheels.
  13. To install, reverse the removal procedure. If equipped with fire suppression system, repower the system.
