Test Procedure

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2006 Ford RV Cutaway, 2006 Ford Pickup, 2006 Ford F550 Super Duty, 2006 Ford F450 Super Duty, and 2006 Ford Econoline.   1. AI1 DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) P1703 
    NOTE: DTC P1703 indicates that during the key on engine running (KOER) self-test, the BPP signal did not cycle.
    • Possible causes:
      • Brake pedal not applied and released during KOER self-test
      • BPP switch
      • BPP switch signal circuit open
      • BPP switch signal short to voltage
    • Key ON, engine OFF.
    • Access the PCM and monitor the BPP PID.

    Does the BPP PID indicate ON? 

    Yes No
    GO to  AI2. GO to  AI4.
  2. AI2 CHECK THE BPP SWITCH 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • BPP Switch connector disconnected.
    • Key ON, engine OFF.
    • Access the PCM and monitor the BPP PID.

    Does the BPP PID indicate ON? 

    Yes No
    GO to  AI3. INSTALL a new BPP switch. CLEAR the DTCs.
    REPEAT the self-test.
  3. AI3 CHECK THE BPP SWITCH SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • PCM connector disconnected.
    • Key ON, engine OFF.
    • Measure the voltage between:
      ( + ) BPP Switch Connector, Harness Side ( - )
      BPP Ground

    Is any voltage indicated? 

    Yes No
    REPAIR the short circuit. CLEAR the DTCs.
    REPEAT the self-test.
    GO to  AI8.
  4. AI4 CHECK THE BPP SWITCH OPERATION 
    • Access the PCM and monitor the BPP PID.
    • Apply and release the brake pedal.

    Does the BPP PID state change when the brake pedal is fully applied and released? 

    Yes No
    UNABLE to duplicate the condition. CHECK for a loose connection, and damaged or corroded terminals. WIGGLE the harness attempting to recreate the concern. REPAIR as necessary. REFER to SYMPTOM CHARTS , if a driveability concern exists. GO to  AI5.
  5. AI5 CHECK THE BPP SWITCH FOR VOLTAGE 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • BPP Switch connector disconnected.
    • Measure the voltage between:
      ( + ) BPP Switch Connector, Harness Side ( - )
      B+ Ground

    Is the voltage greater than 10.5 V? 

    Yes No
    GO to  AI6. REPAIR the open circuit. CLEAR the DTCs.
    REPEAT the self-test.
  6. AI6 CHECK THE BPP SWITCH SIGNAL 
    • Key ON, engine OFF.
    • Access the PCM and monitor the BPP PID.
    • Connect a 5 amp fused jumper wire between the following:
      Point A BPP Switch Connector, Harness Side Point B BPP Switch Connector, Harness Side
      B+ BPP

    Does the BPP PID indicate ON? 

    Yes No
    INSTALL a new BPP switch. CLEAR the DTCs.
    REPEAT the self-test.
    GO to  AI7.
  7. AI7 CHECK THE BPP SWITCH INPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • PCM connector disconnected.
    • Measure the resistance between:
      ( + ) BPP Switch Connector, Harness Side ( - ) PCM Connector, Harness Side
      BPP BPP - Pin B18

    Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes No
    GO to  AI8. REPAIR the open circuit. CLEAR the DTCs.
    REPEAT the self-test.
  8. AI8 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all the PCM connectors.
    • Visually inspect for:
      • pushed out pins
      • corrosion
    • Connect all the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Carry out the PCM self-test and verify the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes No
    INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to FLASH ELECTRICALLY ERASABLE PROGRAMMABLE READ ONLY MEMORY (EEPROM) . The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
