Test Procedure

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 22 other vehicles, including the 2011 Mercury Milan, 2011 Mercury Mariner, 2011 Mercury Grand Marquis, 2011 Lincoln Town Car, and 2011 Lincoln Navigator L. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. DN1 CHECK FOR DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) 
    • Carry out a visual inspection.
    • Carry out the PCM self-test.
    • Record the DTCs.
    • Access the freeze frame data (if available) and record the DTC malfunction conditions.
    • Clear the PCM DTCs.
    • Carry out the PCM self-test.

    Are DTCs P007C, P007D, P0097, P0098, P0106, P0107, P0108, P0109, P0236, P0237, P0238 or P025E present? 

    Yes No
    For DTCs P007C, P007D, P0097 or P0098, GO to  DN2.
    For DTCs P0106, P0107, P0108, P0109, P0236, P0237, P0238 or P025E, GO to  DN13.
    GO to  DN22.
  2. DN2 DTCS P007C, P007D, P0097 OR P0098: PRELIMINARY DIAGNOSIS 

    Are DTCs P007C, P007D, P0097 or P0098 present? 

    Yes No
    For KOEO and KOER DTCs P007C or P0097, GO to  DN3.
    For KOEO and KOER DTCs P007D or P0098, GO to  DN6.
    For continuous memory DTCs P007C, P007D, P0097 or P0098, GO to  DN10.
    For all others, GO to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) CHARTS AND DESCRIPTIONS .
  3. DN3 DTCS P007C OR P0097: SIMULATE AN OPPOSITE SIGNAL TO THE PCM 
    NOTE: The DTC indicates the sensor signal is less than the self-test minimum.
    • For the TCBP/CACT sensor,
    • TCBP/CACT Sensor connector disconnected.
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Access the PCM and monitor the CAC_V (VOLT) PID.
    • For the MAP/IAT2 sensor,
    • MAP/IAT2 Sensor connector disconnected.
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Access the PCM and monitor the IAT2 (VOLT) PID.

    Is the voltage greater than 4.2 V? 

    Yes No
    GO to  DN4. GO to  DN5.
  4. DN4 CHECK THE VREF CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE 
    • For the TCBP/CACT sensor,
    • Measure the voltage between:
      VOLTAGE REFERENCE CHART

      (+) TCBP/CACT Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-) TCBP/CACT Sensor Connector, Harness Side
      VREF - Pin 2 SIGRTN - Pin 4
    • For the MAP/IAT2 sensor,
    • Measure the voltage between:
      VOLTAGE REFERENCE CHART

      (+) MAP/IAT2 Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-) MAP/IAT2 Sensor Connector, Harness Side
      VREF - Pin 2 SIGRTN - Pin 4

    Is the voltage between 4.5 - 5.5 V? 

    Yes No
    INSTALL a new TCBP/CACT or MAP/IAT2 sensor. REFER to the appropriate Electronic Engine Controls article .
    Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
    GO to PINPOINT TEST C .
  5. DN5 CHECK THE IAT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • PCM connector disconnected.
    • For the TCBP/CACT sensor,
    • Measure the resistance between:
      RESISTANCE REFERENCE CHART

      (+) TCBP/CACT Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-) PCM Connector, Harness Side
      CACT - Pin 3 SIGRTN
    • Measure the resistance between:
      RESISTANCE REFERENCE CHART

      (+) TCBP/CACT Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-)
      CACT - Pin 3 Ground
    • For the MAP/IAT2 sensor,
    • Measure the resistance between:
      RESISTANCE REFERENCE CHART

      (+) MAP/IAT2 Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-) PCM Connector, Harness Side
      IAT2 - Pin 3 SIGRTN
    • Measure the resistance between:
      RESISTANCE REFERENCE CHART

      (+) MAP/IAT2 Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-)
      IAT2 - Pin 3 Ground

    Is the resistance greater than 10K ohms? 

    Yes No
    INSTALL a new TCBP/CACT or MAP/IAT2 sensor. REFER to the appropriate Electronic Engine Controls article .
    Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
    If the concern or DTC is still present,
    GO to  DN25.
    REPAIR the short circuit. Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  6. DN6 DTCS P007D OR P0098: CHECK THE IAT SIGNAL CIRCUIT 
    NOTE: The DTC indicates the sensor signal is greater than the self-test maximum.
    • Ignition OFF.
    • For the TCBP/CACT sensor,
    • TCBP/CACT Sensor connector disconnected.
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Measure the voltage between:
      VOLTAGE REFERENCE CHART

      (+) TCBP/CACT Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-)
      CACT - Pin 3 Ground
    • For the MAP/IAT2 sensor,
    • MAP/IAT2 Sensor connector disconnected.
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Measure the voltage between:
      VOLTAGE REFERENCE CHART

      (+) MAP/IAT2 Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-)
      IAT2 - Pin 3 Ground

    Is the voltage between 4.5 - 5.5 V? 

    Yes No
    GO to  DN7. GO to  DN8.
  7. DN7 CHECK THE TCBP/CACT OR MAP/IAT2 SENSOR RESISTANCE 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • For the TCBP/CACT sensor,
    • Measure the resistance between:
      RESISTANCE REFERENCE CHART

      (+) TCBP/CACT Sensor Connector, Component Side (-) TCBP/CACT Sensor Connector, Component Side
      CACT - Pin 3 SIGRTN - Pin 4
    • For the MAP/IAT2 sensor,
    • Measure the resistance between:
      RESISTANCE REFERENCE CHART

      (+) MAP/IAT2 Sensor Connector, Component Side (-) MAP/IAT2 Sensor Connector, Component Side
      IAT2 - Pin 3 SIGRTN - Pin 4

    Is the resistance between 1K - 500K ohms? 

    Yes No
    GO to  DN8. INSTALL a new TCBP/CACT or MAP/IAT2 sensor. REFER to the appropriate Electronic Engine Controls article .
    Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  8. DN8 CHECK THE SIGNAL AND SIGRTN CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN IN THE HARNESS 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • PCM connector disconnected.
    • For the TCBP/CACT sensor,
    • Measure the resistance between:
      RESISTANCE REFERENCE CHART

      (+) TCBP/CACT Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-) PCM Connector, Harness Side
      CACT - Pin 3 CACT
      SIGRTN - Pin 4 SIGRTN
    • For the MAP/IAT2 sensor,
    • Measure the resistance between:
      RESISTANCE REFERENCE CHART

      (+) MAP/IAT2 Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-) PCM Connector, Harness Side
      IAT2 - Pin 3 IAT2
      SIGRTN - Pin 4 SIGRTN

    Are the resistances less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes No
    GO to  DN9. REPAIR the open circuit. Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  9. DN9 CHECK THE SIGNAL FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE IN HARNESS 
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • For the TCBP/CACT sensor,
    • Measure the voltage between:
      VOLTAGE REFERENCE CHART

      (+) TCBP/CACT Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-)
      CACT - Pin 3 Ground
    • For the MAP/IAT2 sensor,
    • Measure the voltage between:
      VOLTAGE REFERENCE CHART

      (+) MAP/IAT2 Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-)
      IAT2 - Pin 3 Ground

    Is any voltage present? 

    Yes No
    REPAIR the short circuit. Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. INSTALL a new TCBP/CACT or MAP/IAT2 sensor. REFER to the appropriate Electronic Engine Controls article .
    Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
    If the concern or DTC is still present,
    GO to  DN25.
  10. DN10 SELF-TEST DTCS P007C, P007D, P0097 OR P0098: INTERMITTENT CHECK 
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • For the TCBP/CACT sensor,
    • Access the PCM and monitor the CAC_V (VOLT) PID.
    • For the MAP/IAT2 sensor,
    • Access the PCM and monitor the IAT2 (VOLT) PID.
    • While observing the PID, carry out the following:
      • Tap on the sensor to simulate road shock
      • Wiggle the sensor connector

    Is there a large change in the voltage reading? 

    Yes No
    DISCONNECT and INSPECT the connector.
    If OK, INSTALL a new TCBP/CACT or MAP/IAT2 sensor. REFER to the appropriate Electronic Engine Controls article .
    Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
    GO to  DN11.
  11. DN11 CHECK THE ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROL (EEC) WIRING HARNESS 
    • For the TCBP/CACT sensor,
    • Access the PCM and monitor the CAC_V (VOLT) PID.
    • For the MAP/IAT2 sensor,
    • Access the PCM and monitor the IAT2 (VOLT) PID.
    • While observing the PID, wiggle, shake, and bend small sections of the wiring harness while working from the sensor to the PCM.

    Is there a large change in the voltage reading? 

    Yes No
    ISOLATE the concern. REPAIR as necessary.
    Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
    GO to  DN12.
  12. DN12 CHECK THE PCM AND VEHICLE HARNESS CONNECTORS 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • PCM connector disconnected.
    • For the TCBP/CACT sensor,
    • TCBP/CACT Sensor connector disconnected.
    • For the MAP/IAT2 sensor,
    • MAP/IAT2 Sensor connector disconnected.
    • Check for a loose connection, and damaged or corroded terminals.

    Are the connectors and terminals OK? 

    Yes No
    The concern is not present at this time.
    DISREGARD the current diagnostic trouble code (DTC) at this time. DIAGNOSE the next DTC. GO to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) CHARTS AND DESCRIPTIONS .
    REPAIR as necessary.
    Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  13. DN13 DTCS P0106, P0107, P0108, P0109, P0236, P0237, P0238 OR P025E: PRELIMINARY DIAGNOSIS 

    Are DTCs P0106, P0107, P0108, P0109, P0236, P0237, P0238 or P025E present? 

    Yes No
    For DTCs P0106 or P0236, GO to  DN14.
    For KOEO and KOER DTCs P0107 or P0237, GO to  DN14.
    For KOEO and KOER DTCs P0108 or P0238, GO to  DN18.
    For continuous memory DTCs P0107, P0108, P0109, P0237, P0238 or P025E, GO to  DN22.
    For all others, GO to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) CHARTS AND DESCRIPTIONS .
  14. DN14 DTC P0107 OR P0237: SETTING DTC P0108 OR P0238 
    NOTE: The sensor is disconnected to simulate the opposite DTC.
    • Ignition OFF.
    • For the TCBP/CACT sensor,
    • TCBP/CACT Sensor connector disconnected.
    • For the MAP/IAT2 sensor,
    • MAP/IAT2 Sensor connector disconnected.
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Carry out the KOEO on-demand self-test.

    Is DTC P0108 or P0238 present? 

    Yes No
    GO to  DN15. GO to  DN16.
  15. DN15 CHECK THE VREF CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • For the TCBP/CACT sensor,
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Measure the voltage between:
      VOLTAGE REFERENCE CHART

      (+) TCBP/CACT Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-) TCBP/CACT Sensor Connector, Harness Side
      VREF - Pin 2 SIGRTN - Pin 4
    • For the MAP/IAT2 sensor,
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Measure the voltage between:
      VOLTAGE REFERENCE CHART

      (+) MAP/IAT2 Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-) MAP/IAT2 Sensor Connector, Harness Side
      VREF - Pin 2 SIGRTN - Pin 4

    Is the voltage between 4.5 - 5.5 V? 

    Yes No
    INSTALL a new TCBP/CACT or MAP/IAT2 sensor. REFER to the appropriate Electronic Engine Controls article .
    Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
    GO to PINPOINT TEST C .
  16. DN16 CHECK THE SENSOR SIGNAL 
    • For the TCBP/CACT sensor,
    • Access the PCM and monitor the TIP_PRES_V (VOLT) PID.
    • Connect a 5 amp fused jumper wire between the following:
      CONNECTOR PINS REFERENCE CHART

      Point A TCBP/CACT Sensor Connector, Harness Side Point B TCBP/CACT Sensor Connector, Harness Side
      VREF - Pin 2 TCBP - Pin 1
    • For the MAP/IAT2 sensor,
    • Access the PCM and monitor the MAP (VOLT) PID.
    • Connect a 5 amp fused jumper wire between the following:
      CONNECTOR PINS REFERENCE CHART

      Point A MAP/IAT2 Sensor Connector, Harness Side Point B MAP/IAT2 Sensor Connector, Harness Side
      VREF - Pin 2 MAP - Pin 1

    Is the TIP_PRES_V or MAP PID voltage approximately 4.5 to 5.5 volts? 

    Yes No
    INSTALL a new TCBP/CACT or MAP/IAT2 sensor. REFER to the appropriate Electronic Engine Controls article .
    Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
    GO to  DN17.
  17. DN17 CHECK THE SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND OR SIGNAL RETURN 
    • For the TCBP/CACT sensor,
    • Measure the resistance between:
      RESISTANCE REFERENCE CHART

      (+) TCBP/CACT Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-)
      TCBP - Pin 1 Ground
    • Measure the resistance between:
      RESISTANCE REFERENCE CHART

      (+) TCBP/CACT Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-) TCBP/CACT Sensor Connector, Harness Side
      TCBP - Pin 1 SIGRTN - Pin 4
    • For the MAP/IAT2 sensor,
    • Measure the resistance between:
      RESISTANCE REFERENCE CHART

      (+) MAP/IAT2 Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-)
      MAP - Pin 1 Ground
    • Measure the resistance between:
      RESISTANCE REFERENCE CHART

      (+) MAP/IAT2 Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-) MAP/IAT2 Sensor Connector, Harness Side
      MAP - Pin 1 SIGRTN - Pin 4

    Is the resistance greater than 10K ohms? 

    Yes No
    INSTALL a new TCBP/CACT or MAP/IAT2 sensor. REFER to the appropriate Electronic Engine Controls article .
    Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
    If the concern or DTC is still present,
    GO to  DN25.
    REPAIR the short circuit. Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  18. DN18 DTCS P0108 AND P0238: CHECK THE SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • PCM connector disconnected.
    • For the TCBP/CACT sensor,
    • Measure the resistance between:
      RESISTANCE REFERENCE CHART

      (+) TCBP/CACT Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-) PCM Connector, Harness Side
      TCBP - Pin 1 TCBP
    • For the MAP/IAT2 sensor,
    • Measure the resistance between:
      RESISTANCE REFERENCE CHART

      (+) MAP/IAT2 Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-) PCM Connector, Harness Side
      MAP - Pin 1 MAP

    Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes No
    GO to  DN19. REPAIR the open circuit. Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  19. DN19 CHECK THE SENSOR SIGNAL RETURN CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • PCM connector disconnected.
    • For the TCBP/CACT sensor,
    • TCBP/CACT Sensor connector disconnected.
    • Measure the resistance between:
      RESISTANCE REFERENCE CHART

      (+) TCBP/CACT Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-) PCM Connector, Harness Side
      SIGRTN - Pin 4 SIGRTN
    • For the MAP/IAT2 sensor,
    • MAP/IAT2 Sensor connector disconnected.
    • Measure the resistance between:
      RESISTANCE REFERENCE CHART

      (+) MAP/IAT2 Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-) PCM Connector, Harness Side
      SIGRTN - Pin 4 SIGRTN

    Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes No
    GO to  DN20. REPAIR the open circuit. Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  20. DN20 CHECK THE SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VREF 
    • For the TCBP/CACT sensor,
    • Measure the resistance between:
      RESISTANCE REFERENCE CHART

      (+) TCBP/CACT Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-) TCBP/CACT Sensor Connector, Harness Side
      TCBP - Pin 1 VREF - Pin 2
    • For the MAP/IAT2 sensor,
    • Measure the resistance between:
      RESISTANCE REFERENCE CHART

      (+) MAP/IAT2 Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-) MAP/IAT2 Sensor Connector, Harness Side
      MAP - Pin 1 VREF - Pin 2

    Is the resistance greater than 10K ohms? 

    Yes No
    GO to  DN21. REPAIR the short circuit. Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  21. DN21 CHECK THE SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE 
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • For the TCBP/CACT sensor,
    • Measure the voltage between:
      VOLTAGE REFERENCE CHART

      (+) TCBP/CACT Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-)
      TCBP - Pin 1 Ground
    • For the MAP/IAT2 sensor,
    • Measure the voltage between:
      VOLTAGE REFERENCE CHART

      (+) MAP/IAT2 Sensor Connector, Harness Side (-)
      MAP - Pin 1 Ground

    Is any voltage present? 

    Yes No
    REPAIR the short circuit. Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. INSTALL a new TCBP/CACT or MAP/IAT2 sensor. REFER to the appropriate Electronic Engine Controls article .
    Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
    If the concern or DTC is still present,
    GO to  DN25.
  22. DN22 SELF-TEST DTCS P0107, P0108, P0109, P0237, P0238 OR P025E: INTERMITTENT CHECK 
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • For the TCBP/CACT sensor,
    • Access the PCM and monitor the TIP_PRES_V (VOLT) PID.
    • For the MAP/IAT2 sensor,
    • Access the PCM and monitor the MAP (VOLT) PID.
    • While observing the PID, carry out the following:
      • Tap on the sensor to simulate road shock
      • Wiggle the sensor connector

    Is there a large change in the voltage reading? 

    Yes No
    DISCONNECT and INSPECT the connector.
    If OK, INSTALL a new TCBP/CACT or MAP/IAT2 sensor. REFER to the appropriate Electronic Engine Controls article .
    Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
    GO to  DN23.
  23. DN23 CHECK THE ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROL (EEC) WIRING HARNESS 
    • For the TCBP/CACT sensor,
    • Access the PCM and monitor the TIP_PRES_V (VOLT) PID.
    • For the MAP/IAT2 sensor,
    • Access the PCM and monitor the MAP (VOLT) PID.
    • While observing the PID, wiggle, shake, and bend small sections of the wiring harness while working from the sensor to the PCM.

    Is there a large change in the voltage reading? 

    Yes No
    ISOLATE the concern. REPAIR as necessary.
    Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
    GO to  DN24.
  24. DN24 CHECK THE PCM AND VEHICLE HARNESS CONNECTORS 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • PCM connector disconnected.
    • For the TCBP/CACT sensor,
    • TCBP/CACT Sensor connector disconnected.
    • For the MAP/IAT2 sensor,
    • MAP/IAT2 Sensor connector disconnected.
    • Check for a loose connection, and damaged or corroded terminals.

    Are the connectors and terminals OK? 

    Yes No
    For DTCs, DISREGARD the current diagnostic trouble code (DTC) at this time. DIAGNOSE the next DTC. GO to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) CHARTS AND DESCRIPTIONS .
    For symptoms without DTCs, RETURN to SYMPTOM CHARTS for further direction.
    REPAIR as necessary.
    Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  25. DN25 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all the PCM connectors.
    • Visually inspect for:
      • pushed out pins
      • corrosion
    • Connect all the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Carry out the PCM self-test.
    • Verify the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes No
    INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to FLASH ELECTRICALLY ERASABLE PROGRAMMABLE READ ONLY MEMORY (EEPROM) , PROGRAMMING THE VID BLOCK FOR A REPLACEMENT PCM . The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
