Removal and Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2010 Mercury Mariner and 2010 Ford Escape. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove the steering column opening trim panel.
  2. NOTE: When separating the upper steering column shroud from the lower steering column shroud, care must be taken to make sure the upper steering column shroud retaining tabs are not damaged.
  3. Release the LH side of the upper steering column in the following sequence:
    1. Apply inboard pressure on the lower steering column shroud and insert a plastic trim removal tool between the upper and lower steering column shrouds.
    2. Using the plastic trim removal tool, carefully separate the LH side of the upper steering column shroud from the lower steering column shroud by lifting the plastic trim removal tool upward as shown.

  4. NOTE: When separating the upper steering column shroud from the lower steering column shroud, care must be taken to make sure the upper steering column shroud retaining tabs are not damaged.
  5. Release the RH side of the upper steering column in the following sequence:
    1. Apply inboard pressure on the lower steering column shroud and insert a plastic trim removal tool between the upper and lower steering column shrouds.
    2. Using the plastic trim removal tool, carefully separate the RH side of the upper steering column shroud from the lower steering column shroud by lifting the plastic trim removal tool upward as shown.

  6. Remove the upper steering column shroud from the lower steering column shroud.
  7. Remove the 3 lower steering column shroud screws.
  8. Release the steering column tilt lever.
  9. Remove the lower steering column shroud.
  10. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
