Pinpoint Test N: DTC C1446 - Base Brake Failure/Brake Switch Stuck Or Inoperative

  1. N1 CHECK FOR ABS MODULE COMMUNICATION (U-CODE) DTCs 
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Self Test ABS Module
    • Carry out the ABS module self-test. Retrieve and record any ABS module DTCs.
    • Are DTCs U0073, U0115 and/or U0155 retrieved with DTC C1446? 
    1. YES  : REFER to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK article to diagnose the HS-CAN bus.
    2. NO  : Go to  N2.
  2. N2 CHECK THE BRAKE FLUID LEVEL 
    • Check the brake fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir.
    • Is the brake fluid at an acceptable level? 
    1. YES  : Go to  N3.
    2. NO  : FILL the master cylinder reservoir to an acceptable level. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

      If DTC C1446 returns, go to  N3.

      If DTC C1446 does not return, REFER to Diagnosis and Testing in BRAKE SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION article to diagnose the base brake system.

  3. N3 VERIFY RED BRAKE WARNING INDICATOR OPERATION 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Monitor the red brake warning indicator.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Does the red brake warning indicator illuminate for a short period and then go out? 
    1. YES  : Go to  N4.
    2. NO  : REFER to Diagnosis and Testing in INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (IC) AND WARNING CHIMES article to diagnose the red brake warning indicator and brake fluid level sensor.
  4. N4 MONITOR THE PCM BRAKE PEDAL POSITION (BPP/BOO) PID 
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: DataLogger PCM
    • Firmly press and release the brake pedal while monitoring the BPP/BOO PID.
    • Does the PID agree with the brake pedal position? 
    1. YES  : Go to  N6.
    2. NO  : Go to  N5.
  5. N5 VERIFY CORRECT STOPLAMP OPERATION 
    • Press and release the brake pedal.
    • Have an assistant monitor the stoplamp.
    • Do the stoplamp operate correctly? 
    1. YES  : Go to  N5.
    2. NO  : REFER to Stoplamp in EXTERIOR LIGHTING article to continue diagnosis of the BPP switch.
  6. N6 MONITOR THE ABS MODULE BRAKE ON/OFF (BOO_ABS) PID 
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: DataLogger ABS Module
    • Firmly press and release the brake pedal while monitoring the ABS module BOO_ABS PID.
    • Did the PID agree with the brake pedal position? 
    1. YES  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. CARRY OUT the self-test with the brake pedal not applied.
    2. NO  : REFER to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK article to diagnose the HS-CAN bus.
