Intermediate Shaft: Installation

    All vehicles 

    CAUTION: Do not damage the oil seal when inserting the front drive halfshaft.

  1. Install the intermediate shaft in the transmission.
  2. Automatic transmission vehicles 

    NOTE: Install a new retaining clip and nuts on the intermediate bearing.
    NOTE: Install a new intermediate shaft bracket.
    NOTE: Insert the intermediate shaft into the transmission until the intermediate shaft bearing touches the rib of the intermediate shaft bracket.
  3. Install the intermediate shaft and the front drive halfshaft in the transmission.
    • Tighten the lower nut to 5 Nm (44 lb-in).
    • Tighten both nuts to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).

  4. Manual transmission vehicles 

    NOTE: Insert the intermediate shaft into the transmission until the intermediate shaft bearing contacts the rib of the intermediate shaft bracket.
  5. Install the intermediate shaft in the transmission.
  6. Install the bracket to the engine block.
    • Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
    CAUTION: The inner joint must not be bent at more than 18 degrees.
  7. Install front drive halfshaft.
    • Pack the tripod joint with grease for the inner joint (refer to SPECIFICATIONS  for fill capacities).
      1. Insert a small screwdriver under the gaiter seat to allow the air to escape.
      2. Slide the tripod joint in as far as the stop, then pull it out 20 mm.
        • Remove the screwdriver.

  8. Insert the clamping strap in the gaiter ring groove and tighten it with the locking clamp.
    • Insert the clamping strap in the gaiter ring groove.

  9. All vehicles 

  10. Attach the right-hand suspension arm.
    • Tighten to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft).

  11. Check the transmission fluid level. For additional information, refer to MANUAL TRANSAXLE-TRANSMISSION or AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE-TRANSMISSION .
  12. Lower the vehicle.
  13. Tighten the right-hand suspension strut nut.
    • Stop it from turning using an Allen key.
    • Tighten by hand with a ring spanner.
    • Use a torque wrench to tighten.
    • Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
