NOTE: The A/C clutch air gap must be measured and adjusted, using the correct method, to make sure of correct A/C function. An A/C clutch air gap that is greater than specifications may reduce A/C compressor performance, cause the A/C compressor to be inoperative or cause premature wear of the A/C clutch disc and hub and A/C compressor pulley. An A/C clutch air gap that is less than specifications may cause the A/C compressor to operate continuously, or cause premature wear of the A/C clutch disc and hub and A/C compressor pulley.
  1. Remove the A/C compressor. For additional information, refer to CLIMATE CONTROL .
  2. Install the runout gauge set.
    1. Clamp the runout gauge set on the compressor-mounting boss.
    2. Position the runout gauge set to contact the disc portion of the A/C clutch disc and hub assembly, and tighten the flex-arm.

  3. Using 2 fused jumper wires, connect the A/C clutch field coil to the power and ground from a 12V power supply.
  4. Adjust the runout gauge to the ZERO position with the A/C clutch engaged.
  5. Disconnect the compressor clutch field coil from the 12V power supply.
  6. NOTE: When the 12V power supply is disconnected from the A/C clutch field coil, the clutch air gap measurement will be displayed on the runout gauge.

  7. Record the clutch air gap measurement shown on the runout gauge.
  8. Repeat the measurement on 2 additional, equally spaced places on the A/C clutch disc and hub assembly.
  9. Remove the runout gauge set from the A/C compressor.
    • If the clutch air gap is within specification, install the A/C compressor. For additional information, refer to CLIMATE CONTROL .
    • If the clutch air gap is not within specification, proceed with A/C clutch air gap adjustment.
  10. Remove the A/C clutch disc and hub bolt.
    1. Hold the A/C clutch disc and hub with the special tool.
    2. Remove the A/C clutch disc and hub bolt.

  11. Remove the A/C clutch disc and hub.
    • Thread an 8 x 1.25 mm bolt into the A/C clutch disc and hub to force it from the A/C compressor shaft.
    • Lift the A/C clutch disc and hub and the A/C clutch disc and hub spacer from the A/C compressor shaft.
  12. Add or remove A/C clutch disc and hub spacers based on the measurements taken.
  13. Install the A/C clutch disc and hub.
  14. Install the A/C clutch disc and hub bolt.
    1. Hold the A/C clutch disc and hub with the special tool.
    2. Install the A/C clutch disc and hub bolt.
      • Tighten to 13 Nm (10 lb-ft).
