Pinpoint Test D: The Speedometer/Odometer Is Inoperative

  1. D1 CARRY OUT THE SPEEDOMETER ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE DIAGNOSTIC TOOL 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Instrument Cluster Active Command.
    • Select the instrument cluster speedometer active command. Trigger the speedometer and scroll in increments of 10% while monitoring the speedometer. The speed indicated should increase in increments of approximately 20 km/h (12 mph) for each 10% change.
    • Does the speed indicated increase within specifications? 

    Yes  : GO to D2.

    No  : GO to  D3.

  2. D2 MONITOR THE VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR (VSS) PID 
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Vehicle Speed PID.
    • Monitor the vehicle speed PID while driving the vehicle.
    • Does the PCM vehicle speed PID (Escape, Mariner) or TCM vehicle speed PID (Escape Hybrid) match the speedometer reading on the instrument cluster? 

    Yes  : GO to D3.

    No  : GO to  D4 (Escape, Mariner).

    GO to  D5 (Escape Hybrid).

  3. D3 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION 
    • Disconnect the instrument cluster connector.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect the instrument cluster connector and make sure it seats correctly.
    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  in this article. TEST the system for normal operation.

    No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.

  4. D4 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all the PCM connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  : INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - 2.3L (2.3L) or ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - 3.0L (4V) (3.0L). TEST the system for normal operation.

    No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.

  5. D5 CHECK FOR CORRECT TCM OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all the TCM connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect the TCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  : INSTALL a new TCM. REFER to AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION - ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION (ECVT) . Test the system for normal operation.

    No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
