Pinpoint Test W: The Passive Anti-Theft System (Pats) Indicator Is Never/Always On

  1. W1 DETERMINE THE CONDITION 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Is the PATS indicator always on? 
      • Yes  : GO to  W4.
      • No  : GO to  W2.
  2. W2 CHECK THE PCM OPERATION 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: PCM C175b.
    • NOTE: If the fuse fails, repair the circuit for a short to power.

    • Connect a fused (5A) jumper wire between the PCM C175b pin 37, circuit 31S-GL6 (BK/OG), harness side and ground.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Does the PATS indicator illuminate? 
      • Yes  : GO to  W6.
      • No  : GO to  W3.
  3. W3 CHECK CIRCUIT 31S-GL6 (BK/OG) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C2220.
    • Measure the resistance between the PCM C175b pin 37, circuit 31S-GL6 (BK/OG), harness side and the instrument cluster C2220 pin 23, circuit 31S-GL6 (BK/OG), harness side.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
      • Yes  : GO to  W7.
      • No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  4. W4 CHECK THE PCM 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: PCM C175b.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Observe the PATS indicator.
    • Is the PATS indicator still illuminated? 
      • Yes  : GO to  W5.
      • No  : GO to  W6.
  5. W5 CHECK CIRCUIT 31S-GL6 (BK/OG) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C2220.
    • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C2220 pin 23, circuit 31S-GL6 (BK/OG), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? 
      • Yes  : GO to  W7.
      • No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  6. W6 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all the PCM connectors.
    • Check for:
      • Corrosion
      • Pushed-out pins
    • Connect all the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
      • Yes  : INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS . TEST the system for normal operation.
      • No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
  7. W7 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION 
    • Disconnect the instrument cluster connector.
    • Check for:
      • Corrosion
      • Pushed-out pins
    • Connect the instrument cluster connector and make sure it seats correctly.
    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
      • Yes  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . TEST the system for normal operation.
      • No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
