Pinpoint Test N: The Charging System Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On

  1. N1 VERIFY THE SYMPTOM 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Key in START position.
    • Check the operation of the charging system warning indicator and verify the symptom.
    • Is the charging system warning indicator always on? 
      • Yes  : GO to  N2.
      • No  : GO to  N3.
  2. N2 DETERMINE IF THE CHARGING SYSTEM IS OPERATING CORRECTLY 
    • Check the charging system operation.
    • Is the charging system operating correctly? 
  3. N3 CARRY OUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE DIAGNOSTIC TOOL 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Instrument Cluster Active Command.
    • Select the instrument cluster warning lamps and chime active command. Trigger the indicator lamps active command on then off, while observing the charging system warning indicator.
    • Does the charging system warning indicator illuminate when commanded on and turn off when commanded off? 
      • Yes  : GO to  N4.
      • No  : GO to  N5.
  4. N4 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all the PCM connectors.
    • Check for:
      • Corrosion
      • Pushed-out pins
    • Connect all the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
      • Yes  : INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS . TEST the system for normal operation.
      • No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
  5. N5 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION 
    • Disconnect the instrument cluster connector.
    • Check for:
      • Corrosion
      • Pushed-out pins
    • Connect the instrument cluster connector and make sure it seats correctly.
    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
      • Yes  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . TEST the system for normal operation.
      • No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
