Pinpoint Test J: The Anti-Lock Brake System (Abs) Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On

  1. J1 DETERMINE THE CONDITION 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Is the ABS warning indicator always on? 
      • Yes  : GO to  J4.
      • No  : GO to  J2.
  2. J2 CARRY OUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE DIAGNOSTIC TOOL 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Instrument Cluster Active Command.
    • Select the instrument cluster warning lamps and chime active command. Trigger the indicator lamps active command on then off, while observing the ABS indicator.
    • Does the ABS indicator illuminate when commanded on and turn off when commanded off? 
      • Yes  : GO to  J3.
      • No  : GO to  J5.
  3. J3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCS FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND SELF-TESTS 
    • Check for recorded DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self tests.
    • Are any ABS module DTCs recorded? 
    • Yes  : If any ABS DTCs are retrieved, REFER to ANTI-LOCK CONTROL to continue diagnosis of the DTCs.

      If no DTCs are retrieved, GO to  J6.

    • No  : GO to  J5.
  4. J4 CARRY OUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER WARNING LAMPS AND CHIME ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE DIAGNOSTIC TOOL 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Instrument Cluster Active Command.
    • Select the instrument cluster warning lamps and chime active command. Trigger the indicator lamps active command off, while observing the ABS warning indicator.
    • Does the ABS warning indicator turn off when commanded off? 
      • Yes  : REFER to ANTI-LOCK CONTROL to continue diagnosis of the ABS system.
      • No  : GO to  J5.
  5. J5 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION 
    • Disconnect the instrument cluster connector.
    • Check for:
      • Corrosion
      • Pushed-out pins
    • Connect the instrument cluster connector and make sure it seats correctly.
    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
      • Yes  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . TEST the system for normal operation.
      • No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
  6. J6 CHECK FOR CORRECT ABS MODULE OPERATION 
    • Disconnect the ABS module connector.
    • Check for:
      • Corrosion
      • Pushed-out pins
    • Connect the ABS module connector and make sure it seats correctly.
    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
      • Yes  : INSTALL a new ABS module. REFER to ANTI-LOCK CONTROL . TEST the system for normal operation.
      • No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
