Pinpoint Test O: One Turn Signal/Hazard Lamp Is Inoperative

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Mercury Mariner and 2006 Ford Escape. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. O1 USE THE RECORDED DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCs) FROM THE SJB SELF-TEST
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Using the recorded results from the SJB self-test:
    • Were any DTCs recorded?

Yes:  If DTCs B1502, B1506 or C1788, GO to  O4.

If DTCs B1499 or B1503, GO to  O2.

All others, REFER to the SMART JUNCTION BOX (SJB) DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX  for correct diagnostics.

    No:  GO to  O5.

  2. O2 CHECK THE TURN LAMP CIRCUITRY FOR AN OPEN
    • Disconnect: SJB C2280c (Rear Turn Lamp).
    • Disconnect: SJB C2280b (Front Turn Lamp).
    • Measure the resistance between the SJB, harness side and ground as follows:
INOPERATIVE TURN LAMP CONNECTOR-PIN AND CIRCUIT REFERENCE

Inoperative Turn Lamp SJB Connector-Pin Circuit
      LH front or side C2280b-14 3 (LG/WH)
      RH front or side C2280b-23 2 (WH/LB)
      LH rear C2280c-6 3 (LG/WH)
      RH rear C2280c-9 2 (WH/LB)
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

    Yes:  GO to  O5.

    No:  GO to  O3.

  3. O3 CHECK CIRCUIT 57 (BK) FOR AN OPEN
    • Disconnect: Inoperative Turn Lamp.
    • Measure the resistance between the inoperative turn lamp, harness side and ground as follows:
INOPERATIVE TURN LAMP CONNECTOR-PIN AND CIRCUIT REFERENCE

      Inoperative Turn Lamp Connector-Pin Circuit
      LH front C1023-1 57 (BK)
      RH front C1043-1 57 (BK)
      LH side C1123-2 57 (BK)
      RH side C1122-2 57 (BK)
      LH rear C413-1 57 (BK)
      RH rear C416-1 57 (BK)
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes:  REPAIR circuit 2 (WH/LB) (RH turn lamp) or circuit 3 (LG/WH) (LH turn lamp) as necessary. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

No:  REPAIR circuit 57 (BK). CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

  4. O4 CHECK THE TURN LAMP CIRCUITRY FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
    • Disconnect: Inoperative Lamp.
    • Disconnect: SJB C2280b (Front or Side Turn Lamp).
    • Disconnect: SJB C2280c (Rear Turn Lamp).
    • Measure the resistance between the inoperative turn lamp connector, harness side and ground as follows.
INOPERATIVE TURN LAMP CONNECTOR-PIN AND CIRCUIT REFERENCE

      Inoperative Turn Lamp Connector-Pin Circuit
      LH front C1023-3 3 (LG/WH)
      RH front C1043-3 2 (WH/LB)
      LH side C1123-1 3 (LG/WH)
      RH side C1122-1 2 (WH/LB)
      LH rear C413-3 3 (LG/WH)
      RH rear C416-3 2 (WH/LB)
    • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?

    Yes:  GO to  O5.

No:  REPAIR the circuit in question. RUN the on-demand self-test (required to clear certain DTCs). CORRECT any unresolved DTCs. CLEAR all DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.

  5. O5 CHECK FOR CORRECT SJB OPERATION
    • Disconnect all the SJB connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect all the SJB connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present?

Yes:  INSTALL a new SJB. REFER to SMART JUNCTION BOX (SJB) . TEST the system for normal operation.

No:  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
