Pinpoint Test D: The Oil Pressure Gauge Is Inoperative

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2008 Ford RV Cutaway, 2008 Ford Econoline, 2008 Ford E450 Super Duty, and 2008 Ford Cutaway. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
  1. D1 CHECK THE OIL PRESSURE GAUGE OPERATION USING THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (IC) DEALER TEST MODE
    • Enter the dealer test mode. Refer to Instrument Cluster Dealer Test Mode.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Monitor the oil pressure gauge during the gauge sweep in the dealer test mode.
    • Does the engine oil pressure gauge sweep from low (L) to high (H) then return to low (L)?
    1. YES  : If the oil pressure gauge always reads low, go to  D2.

If the oil pressure gauge always reads in the normal range, go to  D5.

    2. NO  : Go to  D7.
  2. D2 CHECK THE ENGINE OIL PRESSURE SWITCH
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Engine Oil Pressure Switch C103
    • Fig 1: Checking Engine Oil Pressure Switch

    • Connect a fused (5A) jumper wire between the engine oil pressure switch C103-1, circuit 31 (WH/RD) (gasoline) or circuit 1308 (BN/OG) (diesel), harness side and ground.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Does the engine oil pressure gauge indicate normal oil pressure?
    1. YES  : REMOVE the jumper wire. Go to  D4.
    2. NO  : REMOVE the jumper wire. Go to  D3.
  3. D3 CHECK CIRCUIT 31 (WH/RD) (GASOLINE) OR CIRCUIT 1308 (BN/OG) (DIESEL) FOR AN OPEN
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster (IC) C220a
    • Fig 2: Checking Circuit 31 (WH/RD) (Gasoline) Or Circuit 1308 (BN/OG) (Diesel) For An Open

    • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster (IC) C220a-13, circuit 31 (WH/RD) (gasoline) or circuit 1308 (BN/OG) (diesel), harness side and the engine oil pressure switch C103-1, circuit 31 (WH/RD) (gasoline) or circuit 1308 (BN/OG) (diesel), harness side.
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
    1. YES  : Go to  D7.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  4. D4 CHECK THE ENGINE OIL PRESSURE
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new engine oil pressure switch. REFER to ENGINE - 4.6L AND 5.4L article or ENGINE - 6.8L article. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : REFER to ENGINE SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION article.
  5. D5 CHECK FOR A STUCK CLOSED ENGINE OIL PRESSURE SWITCH
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Engine Oil Pressure Switch C103
    • Key in ON position.
    • Monitor the oil pressure gauge.
    • Does the oil pressure gauge indicate low oil pressure?
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new engine oil pressure switch. REFER to ENGINE - 4.6L AND 5.4L article or ENGINE - 6.8L article. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : Go to  D6.
  6. D6 CHECK CIRCUIT 31 (WH/RD) (GASOLINE) OR CIRCUIT 1308 (BN/OG) (DIESEL) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster (IC) C220a
    • Fig 3: Checking Circuit 31 (WH/RD) (Gasoline) Or Circuit 1308 (BN/OG) (Diesel) For A Short To Ground
      GF0012791Courtesy of FORD MOTOR CO.
    • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster (IC) C220a-13, circuit 31 (WH/RD) (gasoline) or circuit 1308 (BN/OG) (diesel), harness side and ground.
    • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
    1. YES  : Go to  D7.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  7. D7 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (IC) OPERATION
    • Disconnect all the instrument cluster (IC) connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • damaged pins
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect all the instrument cluster (IC) connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present?
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster (IC). REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) . TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
