Pinpoint Test Y: The Compass Is Inoperative

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2010 Lincoln Town Car. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
  1. Y1 CHECK CIRCUIT 640 (RD/YE) FOR VOLTAGE
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Compass Sensor Module C909
    • Key in ON position.
    • Fig 1: Checking Circuit For Voltage

    • Measure the voltage between the compass sensor module C909-3, circuit 640 (RD/YE), harness side and ground.
    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
    1. YES  : Go to  Y2.
    2. NO  : VERIFY the CJB fuse 8 (10A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  2. Y2 CHECK CIRCUIT 676 (PK/OG) FOR AN OPEN
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Fig 2: Checking Circuit For An Open
      GF0018971Courtesy of FORD MOTOR CO.
    • Measure the resistance between the compass sensor module C909-4, circuit 676 (PK/OG), harness side and ground.
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
    1. YES  : Go to  Y3.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  3. Y3 CHECK CIRCUITS 702 (WH/BK) AND 703 (WH/OG) FOR AN OPEN AND A SHORT TO GROUND
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster (IC) C220
    • Fig 3: Measuring Resistance
      GF0047678Courtesy of FORD MOTOR CO.
    • Measure the resistance between the compass sensor module C909-2, circuit 703 (WH/OG), harness side and the instrument cluster (IC) C220-28, circuit 703 (WH/OG), harness side; and between the compass sensor module C909-2, circuit 703 (WH/OG), harness side and ground.
    • Fig 4: Measuring Resistance
      GF0047679Courtesy of FORD MOTOR CO.
    • Measure the resistance between the compass sensor module C909-1, circuit 702 (WH/BK), harness side and the instrument cluster (IC) C220-29, circuit 702 (WH/BK), harness side; and between the compass sensor module C909-1, circuit 702 (WH/BK), harness side and ground.
    • Are the resistances less than 5 ohms between the compass sensor module and the instrument cluster (IC), and greater than 10,000 ohms between the compass sensor module and ground?
    1. YES  : Go to  Y4.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit in question. TEST the system for normal operation.
  4. Y4 CHECK THE COMPASS SENSOR MODULE FOR OPERATION
    • Install a known good compass sensor module.
    • Does the compass operate correctly?
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new compass sensor module. SET the zone. REFER to Compass Zone Adjustment . CALIBRATE the compass. REFER to Compass Calibration . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
    2. NO  : Go to  Y5.
  5. Y5 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (IC) OPERATION
    • Disconnect the instrument cluster (IC) connector.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • damaged pins
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect the instrument cluster (IC) connector and make sure it seats correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present?
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster (IC). REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) . TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
