Transmission Overheating

DIAGNOSTIC ROUTINES - TRANSMISSION OVERHEATING

Possible Component	Reference/Action
260 - ROUTINE
Powertrain Control System
NOTE: FMEM may be enabled, refer to routine 266. PCM, vehicle wiring harnesses, line pressure control solenoid PC-A, TCC solenoid	Carry out on-board diagnostic tests. See INTRODUCTION - GASOLINE article or INTRODUCTION -- 6.0L DIESEL article for diagnosis and testing of the PCM.
	GO to PINPOINT TEST A and GO to PINPOINT TEST E .
	Repair as required. Clear DTCs, road test and rerun on-board diagnostic test.
Fluid
Incorrect level	Adjust fluid to correct level. Refer to PRELIMINARY INSPECTION .
Transmission External Remote Filter
	Inspect for leakage. If damaged, repair as necessary.
Fluid Pump Assembly
Bolts not tightened to specification	Tighten to specification.
Gasket damaged	Inspect for damage. If damaged, install a new gasket.
Porosity, cross leaks, cup plug missing, plugged hole gears cracked or seized	Inspect for damage. If damaged, repair as necessary.
Control valves and springs or seal damaged, misassembled or stuck	If damaged or parts are missing, install a new seal or pump assembly. If misassembled, reassemble correctly.
Transmission Case
Case vent damaged	Inspect for damage. If damaged, repair as necessary
Torque Converter
Torque converter one-way clutch seized	Remove the transmission. Inspect for damage. Refer to TORQUE CONVERTER in the General Procedures portion of this article. If the torque converter fails to pass the criteria for replacement or is damaged, install a new or remanufactured torque converter.
Excessive torque converter slip detected	Remove the transmission. Inspect for damage. Refer to TORQUE CONVERTER in the General Procedures portion of this article If the torque converter fails to pass the criteria for replacement or is damaged, install a new or remanufactured torque converter.
Other
Restriction in transmission cooling system	Check transmission cooling system efficiency. Refer to TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION COOLING .
Excessive trailer tow load	Refer to the towing manual.
Engine driveability concerns	Check engine driveability concerns. Refer to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - GASOLINE ENGINES and ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - DIESEL ENGINE .
Vehicle heat shields missing or damaged	Inspect for damage. If damaged, repair as necessary.
Vehicle air flow restricted	Inspect for damage. If damaged, repair as necessary.
