Safety Belt Retractor - Front, With Seat Integrated Restraints (SIR): Removal

WARNING: All safety belt assemblies (including retractors, belt tension sensors [BTS] if equipped, buckles, shoulder belt height adjusters, [if so equipped], child safety seat tether attachments and attaching hardware) should be inspected after any collision. All new belt assemblies should be installed unless a qualified technician finds the assemblies show no damage and operate correctly. Belt assemblies not in use during a collision should also be inspected and new assemblies installed if either damage or incorrect operation is noted.
The automatic locking retractor (ALR) feature of the safety belt retractor must be checked by a qualified technician to verify that the ALR feature for a child seat is functioning correctly, in addition to other checks for correct safety belt system function. A new belt and retractor assembly must be installed if the safety belt assembly's "automatic locking retractor" feature or any other safety belt function is not operating correctly when inspected according to the functional inspection procedures in the workshop manual. Failure to install a new belt and retractor assembly could increase the risk of injury in collisions.
NOTE: Driver side shown, passenger side similar. All seats
  1. Remove the seat on the side with the affected safety belt retractor. For additional information, refer to SEATING .
  2. Remove the seat adjuster control knob, recliner lever cover and the seat side trim panel screws.
    1. Remove the seat recliner lever cover screw and cover.
    2. Pull to remove the lumbar control knob.
    3. Remove the 3 seat side trim panel attachment screws (2 shown).

  3. Remove the 2 screws securing the lumbar adjuster control to the seat track riser.
    • Push the lumbar adjuster control inward to provide clearance for trim panel removal.

    4. Vehicles with power seats 

    NOTE: Note the seat control switch wire harness routing for installation.

  4. Disconnect the seat control switch electrical connector.

    5. Vehicles with heated seats 

  5. Disconnect the heated seat switch electrical connector.

    6. All seats 

  6. Remove the side trim cover.
  7. Remove the seat backrest trim panel.
    1. Using a pin-type retainer removal tool, release the 2 pin-type retainers at the bottom of the seat backrest trim panel (see inset for location).
    2. Push the sides of the seat backrest trim panel together and release the retaining clips (see inset for location).
    3. Slide the seat backrest trim panel down, releasing the upper retainers and remove the seat backrest trim panel.

  8. Release the seat backrest trim cover J-clips.

    9. NOTE: The inboard and outboard tower cap covers are not interchangeable.

  9. Remove the inboard, outboard and front tower cap screw covers. Remove the 4 tower cap attachment screws.
    10. NOTE: Observe the retainer bracket orientation.

  10. Remove the screws and the bracket.
  11. Using an appropriate pry tool, separate and remove the outer and front safety belt web guides.
    1. Using a pin-type retainer removal tool, release the 2 pin-type retainers for the web guide.
    2. Remove the front safety belt web guide.
    3. Remove the upper safety belt web guide.

  12. Remove the nut and the safety belt anchor.

    13. NOTE: If reusing the safety belt retractor, do not allow safety belt to completely recoil back into the retractor.
    NOTE: Safety belt retractors are specific to LH or RH seats and are not interchangeable.
  13. Remove the safety belt retractor.
    1. Remove the bolt.
    2. Remove the safety belt retractor through the back of the seat.
      • Route out the safety belt, guide, tongue and anchor.
