PINPOINT TEST M: DTCs C1187, C1188, C1189, C1327 AND C1523 - BRAKE FLUID LEVEL SENSOR FAULT

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Mercury Mariner and 2006 Ford Escape. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Use the Flex Probe Kit for all test connections to prevent damage to the wiring terminals. Do not use standard multi-meter probes.
NOTE: The brake fluid level switch is integral to the master cylinder reservoir which is integral to the brake master cylinder. If a new brake fluid level switch needs to be installed, a new brake master cylinder must be installed.
  1. M1 RETRIEVE THE ABS MODULE DTCs
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.

  2. M2 CHECK THE BRAKE FLUID LEVEL
    • Verify that the brake fluid level is between the MIN and the MAX marks on the brake fluid reservoir.
    • Is the brake fluid level between the MIN and the MAX marks on the brake fluid reservoir?
    1. YES  : Go to  M3.
    2. NO  : INSPECT the brake system for leaks, REPAIR as necessary. If no leaks are found, ADJUST the brake fluid level using the specified fluid. CLEAR the DTC. REPEAT the self test.
  3. M3 ISOLATE THE BRAKE FLUID LEVEL SWITCH
    • Disconnect: Brake Fluid Level Switch C124
    • Measure the resistance between brake fluid level switch C124 pin-1, component side and brake fluid level switch C124 pin-2, component side.
    • Is the resistance approximately 1,200 ohms?
    1. YES  : For DTC C1187  , go to  M4.

      For DTC C1189  , go to  M5.

      For DTC C1327  , go to  M4.

      For DTC C1523  , go to  M4.

    2. NO  : INSTALL a new brake master cylinder. REFER to HYDRAULIC BRAKE SYSTEM ACTUATION article. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  4. M4 CHECK CIRCUITS LCA16 (GN) AND RCA16 (BU/BN) FOR AN OPEN
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: ABS Module C1462
    • Measure the resistance between ABS module C1462-3, circuit RCA16 (BU/BN), harness side and brake fluid level switch C124-2, circuit RCA16 (BU/BN), harness side.
