Front Brake Caliper & Pads: Removal

  1. Remove brake master cylinder filler cap. Check brake fluid level in brake master cylinder reservoir. Remove fluid until brake master cylinder reservoir is half full.
  2. Raise and support vehicle.
  3. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  4. Inspect the pads for wear and contamination.
  5. Remove the front brake flow bolt. Disconnect the front brake hose. Remove and discard the copper washers. See Fig 1. Plug the front brake hose.
  6. Remove the caliper bolts. Hold the guide pins stationary. Remove and discard the caliper bolts.
  7. CAUTION: Do not pry in caliper sight hole to retract pistons as this can damage the pistons and boots.
  8. Lift the caliper off the anchor plate. See Fig 2.
  9. Inspect the disc brake caliper. See Fig 3. If leaks or damaged boots are found, disassembly is required. See FRONT BRAKE CALIPER  under OVERHAUL.
  10. Remove the pads and the pad slippers. See Fig 4. Remove the pads and verify thickness. Remove and discard slippers.
  11. Measure the front brake disc thickness. Install a new front brake disc if not within specification. See Fig 5.
  12. Inspect the front disc brake anchor plate assembly. Check the guide pin boots for damage. See Fig 6. Check the guide pins for binding and damage. Worn or damaged pins should be replaced.
