Pinpoint Test P: The Check Fuel Cap Indicator Is Never/Always On
P1 RETRIEVE AND RECORD THE DTCS FROM BOTH CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) SELF-TESTS
- Key in OFF position.
- Connect the diagnostic tool.
- Key in ON position.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: PCM Self-Test.
- Use the PCM DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-tests.
- Are any PCM DTCs recorded?
Yes
REFER to INTRODUCTION - CNG, FLEX-FUEL & GASOLINE .
No
For the 2.3L, GO to P6.
For all others, GO to P2.
P2 CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE CHECK FUEL CAP INDICATOR
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: Powertrain Control Module (PCM) C175.
- Connect a fused (10A) jumper wire between the powertrain control module (PCM) C175 pin 73 (SVT) or pin 46 (all others), circuit 31A-AA43 (BK/WH), harness side and ground.
- Key in ON position.
- Does the check fuel cap indicator illuminate with the jumper wire connected and turn off when disconnected?
Yes
GO to P7.
No
If the check fuel cap indicator is never on, GO to P3. If the check fuel cap indicator is always on, GO to P5.
P3 CHECK CIRCUIT 31S-AA43 (BK/WH) FOR OPEN
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220a.
- Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C220a pin 25, circuit 31S-AA43 (BK/WH), harness side and the PCM C175 pin 46 (SVT) or pin 73 (all others), circuit 31S-AA43 (BK/WH), harness side.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to P4.
No
REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
P4 CHECK CIRCUIT 31S-AA43 (BK/WH) FOR SHORT TO POWER
- Key in OFF position.
- Measure the voltage between the instrument cluster C220a pin 25, circuit 31S-AA43 (BK/WH), harness side and ground.
- Is any voltage present?
Yes
REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
GO to P8.
P5 CHECK CIRCUIT 31S-AA43 (BK/WH) FOR SHORT TO GROUND
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220a.
- Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C220a pin 25, circuit 31S-AA43 (BK/WH), harness side and ground.
- Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
Yes
GO to P8.
No
REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
P6 CARRY OUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND
- Key in OFF position.
- Connect the diagnostic tool.
- Key in ON position.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Instrument Cluster Active Command.
- Select the instrument cluster indicator lamp control active command and trigger the check cap indicator active command on then off.
- Does the CHECK FUEL CAP indicator turn on then off when commanded on then off?
Yes
GO to P7.
No
GO to P8.
P7 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION
- Disconnect all PCM connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new PCM. Refer to POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) . TEST the system for normal operation.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
P8 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION
- Disconnect all instrument cluster connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new instrument cluster. Refer to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . TEST the system for normal operation.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
