Pinpoint Test P: The Check Fuel Cap Indicator Is Never/Always On

CAUTION: Use correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.

P1 RETRIEVE AND RECORD THE DTCS FROM BOTH CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) SELF-TESTS 

Yes 

REFER to INTRODUCTION - CNG, FLEX-FUEL & GASOLINE .

No 

For the 2.3L, GO to P6.

For all others, GO to P2.

P2 CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE CHECK FUEL CAP INDICATOR 

Yes 

GO to P7.

No 

If the check fuel cap indicator is never on, GO to P3. If the check fuel cap indicator is always on, GO to P5.

P3 CHECK CIRCUIT 31S-AA43 (BK/WH) FOR OPEN 

Yes 

GO to P4.

No 

REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.

P4 CHECK CIRCUIT 31S-AA43 (BK/WH) FOR SHORT TO POWER 

Yes 

REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.

No 

GO to P8.

P5 CHECK CIRCUIT 31S-AA43 (BK/WH) FOR SHORT TO GROUND 

Yes 

GO to P8.

No 

REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.

P6 CARRY OUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND 

Yes 

GO to P7.

No 

GO to P8.

P7 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION 

Yes 

INSTALL a new PCM. Refer to POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) . TEST the system for normal operation.

No 

The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.

P8 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION 

Yes 

INSTALL a new instrument cluster. Refer to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  . TEST the system for normal operation.

No 

The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
