Parking Brake

NOTE: Ensure rear brakes are at a cool temperature.
  1. On all vehicles, detach boot clip and remove parking brake control boot. Release parking brake lever to its lowest position.
  2. Remove clip and loosen parking brake cable adjustment nut. See Fig 1. Loosen the parking brake cable adjustment nut until there is no tension in the cable.

  3. Apply and release brake pedal to ensure rear brakes are correctly adjusted.
  4. Raise and support vehicle.
  5. Ensure parking brake cable is correctly routed and located in its clips.
  6. Raise parking brake control lever up 4 notches.
  7. Tighten parking brake cable adjustment nut until increased torque is detected.
  8. Apply and release hand brake lever several times with sufficient force to settle parking brake system.
  9. Release parking brake control to its lowest position.
  10. NOTE: Total movement of both the left and right side plungers added together, should be .04-.31" (1-8 mm). See Fig 2.

  11. On vehicles with rear drum brakes, check travel of plunger in left and right side backing plates.
  12. If further adjustment is required, adjust cable using parking brake cable adjustment nut. Rotate rear wheels to ensure brakes do not drag.
  13. On vehicles with rear disc brakes, check the movement of the caliper parking brake lever on the left and right side. The total movement between both the left and the right side caliper parking brake lever and the stop added together should be 0.02-0.08" (0.5-2 mm). See Fig 3. If further adjustment is required, adjust the cable using the parking brake cable adjustment nut. Rotate rear wheels to ensure brakes do not drag.
  14. On all vehicles, ensure parking brake adjustment nut is positioned correctly. Install the parking brake adjustment nut retaining clip. Install boot.
