Cylinder Head: Assembly

  1. Install the valve stem seal.

  2. Install the valve.

  3. Install the valve spring.

  4. Install the valve spring rotator.

  5. Install the valve spring retainer keys.
    1. Install the Valve Spring Compressor.
    2. Install the valve spring retainer keys.

  6. Remove the valve spring compressor.

  7. Install the press-in-place gasket.
    • Install new dowels in the cylinder head and install the gasket.

  8. NOTE: Early build engines will have 4 rocker arm carrier-to-cylinder head bolts. Late build will have 2 rocker arm carrier-to-cylinder head bolts.
    NOTE: Early build shown, late build similar.
    NOTE: Left cylinder head shown, right cylinder head similar.
  9. Install the rocker arm carrier and the bolts.
    • Early build vehicles (M8 bolt), tighten to 31 Nm (23 lb-ft).
    • Late build vehicles (M10 bolt), tighten to 62 Nm (46 lb-ft).

  10. NOTE: When installing the exhaust manifolds, only use prevailing torque hex flange bolts with an interference fit.
    NOTE: Start installing the bolts with the second bolt from the rear on the top. The hole diameter is smaller, therefore allowing alignment of the retaining bolts.
    NOTE: Apply anti-seize lubricant to the bolt threads prior to installing the bolts.
  11. Position the LH manifold and install the bolts in the sequence shown.
    • Tighten to 38 Nm (28 lb-ft).

  13. Position the RH manifold and install the bolts in the sequence shown.
    • Tighten to 38 Nm (28 lb-ft).

  14. Install the lifting bracket on the cylinder head.
