Disc Brake Calipers & Pads: Removal

NOTE: To prevent master cylinder overflow when caliper piston is depressed, remove and discard some brake fluid from master cylinder.

Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel.
Inspect the pads for wear and contamination.
On rear disc brakes with forward-of-axle calipers, remove stone shield retaining nuts and stone shield. See Figure.

CAUTION: Never allow the rear disc brake caliper to hang from the brake hose. Provide suitable support.

On all models, remove two disc brake caliper pin bolts. Lift the disc brake caliper from the disc brake caliper anchor plate and support aside.
Measure the disc brake rotor thickness. Replace the disc brake rotor if not above the minimum thickness specification. See DISC & DRUM BRAKE SPECIFICATIONS .
Inspect the disc brake caliper for leaks. See Figure. If leaks are found, disassembly is required. See DISC BRAKE CALIPER under OVERHAUL.
If necessary, remove the "V" springs. See Figure.
Remove the pads and rail clips. Remove the pads. Remove the front disc brake caliper anchor plate stainless steel rail clips. See Figure.
