Master Cylinder: Disassembly

NOTE: Procedure is for ABS master cylinder, non-ABS similar.
  1. Remove the brake master cylinder. See MASTER CYLINDER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  2. Clean the outside of the brake master cylinder.
  3. Support the brake master cylinder body in a vice.
  4. Remove the reservoir cap.
  5. Use a suitable suction device to drain the brake master cylinder reservoir.
  6. Carefully pry up on the brake master cylinder reservoir to remove.
  7. If equipped, remove the two brake pressure control valves. See Figure.
  8. Remove the primary piston assembly. Depress the primary piston and remove the snap ring. See Figure. Remove and discard the primary piston assembly. See Figure.
  9. Remove the secondary piston assembly. Plug the rear outlet port. See Figure. Apply compressed air into the front outlet port and remove and discard the secondary piston assembly.
  10. Inspect the brake master cylinder bore for damage. Use isopropyl alcohol to clean the bore.
