Brake Shoes: Removal

NOTE: Ensure the rear brakes are at a cool temperature.
  1. Remove the parking brake control boot. Disconnect the boot clip and remove the boot. See Fig 1.
  2. Release the parking brake control to its lowest position.
  3. Loosen the parking brake cable adjustment nut until there is no tension in the cable. Remove the retaining clip. Loosen the adjustment nut. See Figure.
  4. Raise and support vehicle. Remove rear wheel assembly.
  5. On models equipped with ABS, detach the wheel speed sensor wiring harness from the wheel knuckle and floor panel. The wheel speed sensor wiring harness is routed through the wheel knuckle.
  6. Remove the wheel spindle and wheel hub assembly. See Figure. Do NOT remove the brake drum by means of the hub retaining nut.
  7. On all vehicles, remove brake shoe hold-down springs and pins. See Figure.
  8. Disconnect shoes from wheel cylinder. See Fig 2.
  9. Disconnect shoes from anchor block. See Fig 3.
  10. Using a rubber band, wrap around wheel cylinder and hold wheel cylinder pistons in place.
  11. Push parking brake cable lever inward. Disconnect cable. See Fig 4.
  12. Remove lower and upper return spring. See Fig 5.
  13. Pull primary shoe outward, and disconnect strut. Release strut and remove primary shoe from strut and brake shoe adjuster. See Fig 6.
  14. Move strut downward and disconnect parking brake return spring. Remove secondary shoe from strut support. See Fig 7.
