Manual Bleeding
NOTE:
The service ABS Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU) is supplied with brake fluid. Therefore, a conventional bleed procedure should be adequate to remove all air from the brake system.
NOTE:
Ensure the vehicle is standing on a level surface. Check fluid level in master cylinder frequently during brake bleeding sequence. Reservoir must be at least 3/4 full throughout bleeding sequence.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable on vehicles equipped with Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS).
- On all vehicles, clean dirt from master cylinder fluid reservoir filler cap area. Fill reservoir with brake fluid. If master cylinder is known or suspected of having air in the bore, bleed master cylinder first. Release vacuum from power unit by depressing brake pedal several times.
- Install clear vinyl bleeder hose onto first bleed valve to be serviced. See BRAKELINE BLEEDING SEQUENCE table. Place other end of hose in clean, transparent container.
- Position the bleed jar base at least 12" (300 mm) above the bleed valve to maintain fluid pressure and prevent air leaking past the threads of the bleed valve.
- Partially fill container with clean brake fluid so end of hose is submerged in fluid. Open bleeder valve 1/2 turn.
- Operate the brake pedal fully (pumping brake fluid and air into the bleed jar) and allow the brake pedal to return to the rest position.
- Fill the brake fluid reservoir to the MAX mark. Continue operating the brake pedal until air-free fluid is being pumped into the bleed jar.
- With the brake pedal fully depressed, tighten the bleeder valve. Proceed to next bleed valve.
- Check brake pedal for firmness. If brake pedal feels "spongy", repeat bleeding procedure. Top off brake fluid reservoir. Connect negative battery cable on vehicles with ABS.
