(1) MIL illuminates when fault is detected in second drive cycle (California, OBD-II calibration).

(2) ETC sensor has a 10-pin connector.

(3) MIL illuminates when fault is present (Federal).
    NOTE: For additional testing information, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
    NOTE: Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) sensor is not serviced separately. If ETC sensor is defective, accelerator pedal assembly must be replaced. Ensure vehicle is equipped with an ETC sensor and not a Accelerator Pedal (AP) sensor. ETC sensor has a 10-pin connector and AP sensor has a 3-pin connector. ETC sensor is mounted above accelerator pedal. If vehicle is equipped with an AP sensor, do not perform this test. Go to TEST DD: ACCELERATOR PEDAL SENSOR .

  1. 1) KOEO & Continuous Memory DTC P0123: Check ETC PID Reading
    DTC P0123 indicates ETC sensor circuit high input. Possible causes are:
    • Damaged Accelerator Pedal Assembly
    • ETC Sensor Not Installed Properly
    • Faulty ETC Sensor
    • Short To Power In Wiring Harness
    • Faulty PCM

    Ensure scan tool is connected to DLC. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, access ETC PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. While observing scan tool, slowly depress accelerator pedal. If ETC PID reading changes to more than 4.5 volts, leave scan tool in PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD mode and go to next step. If ETC PID reading does not change to more than 4.5 volts, fault cannot be duplicated at this time. Clear DTCs and retest.

  2. 2) Induce Opposite Failure

    Disconnect ETC sensor connector. ETC sensor is mounted above accelerator pedal and has a 10-pin connector. Inspect connector for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. Repair as necessary. If ETC PID reading changes from more than 4.5 volts to zero volt when connector is disconnected, circuit is okay. Replace accelerator pedal assembly. If ETC PID reading does not change from more than 4.5 volts to zero volt when connector is disconnected, leave ETC sensor disconnected and go to next step.
  3. 3) Check ETC Sensor Signal Wire

    Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, measure voltage between chassis ground and Gray/White wire at ETC sensor harness connector. See Figure. If voltage is more than 4.5 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 4.5 volts or less, replace PCM. Clear DTCs and retest.
  4. 4) Check For Short To Voltage

    Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connector and inspect for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. PCM is located in left rear of engine compartment, near brake master cylinder. Repair connector as necessary. Install Rotunda Breakout Box (014-00950), leaving PCM disconnected. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, measure voltage between chassis ground and test pin No. 89 at breakout box. If voltage is present, locate and repair short to voltage in Gray/White wire between PCM and ETC sensor. Clear DTCs and retest. If voltage is not present, replace PCM. Clear DTCs and retest.
  5. NOTE: For additional testing information, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .

  6. 5) KOEO & Continuous Memory DTC P0122
    DTC P0122 indicates ETC sensor circuit low input. Possible causes are:
    • ETC Sensor Not Installed Properly
    • Faulty ETC Sensor
    • Open Or Grounded Circuit In Wiring Harness
    • Faulty PCM

    Ensure scan tool is connected to DLC. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, access ETC PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. While observing ETC PID, slowly depress accelerator pedal. If ETC PID reading changes to less than .37 volt, leave scan tool in PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD mode and go to next step. If ETC PID reading does not change to less than .37 volt, fault cannot be duplicated at this time. Test is complete. Clear DTCs and retest.

  7. 6) Induce Opposite Failure

    Disconnect ETC sensor connector. ETC sensor is mounted above accelerator pedal and has a 10-pin connector. Connect a jumper wire between VREF circuit (Brown/White wire) and ETC SIG circuit (Gray/White wire) at ETC sensor harness connector. See Figure. If ETC PID reading changes to more than 4.5 volts with jumper connected, circuits are okay. Replace accelerator pedal assembly. Clear DTCs and retest. If voltage reading does not change to more than 4.5 volts with jumper connected, disconnect jumper wire and go to next step.
  8. 7) Check VREF Circuit Voltage

    Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, measure voltage between chassis ground and VREF circuit (Brown/White wire) at ETC sensor harness connector. If voltage is 4.5-5.5 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not 4.5-5.5 volts, locate and repair open in Brown/White wire between PCM and ETC sensor. Clear DTCs and retest.
  9. 8) Check ETC GND Circuit

    Turn ignition off. Using DVOM, measure resistance between chassis ground and ETC GND circuit (Yellow/White wire) at ETC sensor harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Yellow/White wire between PCM and ETC sensor. Clear DTCs and retest.
  10. 9) Check ETC Sensor Circuit Continuity

    Disconnect PCM connector and inspect for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. PCM is located in left rear of engine compartment, near brake master cylinder. Repair connector as necessary. Install Rotunda Breakout Box (014-00950), leaving PCM disconnected. Using DVOM, measure resistance of Gray/White wire between terminal No. 8 at ETC sensor harness connector and test pin No. 89 at breakout box. See Figure. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Gray/White wire between PCM and ETC sensor. Clear DTCs and retest.
  11. 10) Check ETC SIG Circuit For Short To Ground

    Turn ignition off. Ensure ETC sensor is disconnected. Using DVOM, measure resistance between test pin No. 89 and test pins No. 51, 77, 91 and 103 at breakout box. If each resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If any resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, locate and repair short to ground in ETC SIG circuit (Gray/White wire). Clear DTCs and retest.
  12. 11) Check VREF Circuit Continuity

    Using DVOM, measure resistance of Brown/White wire between terminal No. 10 at ETC sensor harness connector and test pin No. 90 at breakout box. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Brown/White wire between PCM and ETC sensor. Clear DTCs and retest.
  13. 12) Check ETC GND Circuit Continuity

    Using DVOM, measure resistance of Yellow/White wire between terminal No. 9 at ETC sensor harness connector and test pin No. 24 at breakout box. See Figure. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace PCM. Clear DTCs and retest. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Yellow/White wire between PCM and ETC sensor. Clear DTCs and retest.
  14. NOTE: For additional testing information, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
    NOTE: Ensure vehicle is equipped with an Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) sensor and not an Idle Validation Switch (IVS). IVS has a 2-pin connector and ETC sensor has a 10-pin connector and is mounted above accelerator pedal. If vehicle is equipped with an IVS, do not perform this test. Go to TEST FE, step  1).

  15. 13) KOER & Continuous Memory DTC P0220 Or P0221
    DTC P0220 indicates a malfunction has occurred in IVS circuit. DTC P0221 indicates a performance concern has occurred in IVS circuit. Possible causes are:
    • Blown Fuse
    • Faulty Accelerator Pedal Assembly
    • Open In IGN PWR Feed Circuit To ECT
    • Faulty ETC Sensor
    • ETC Transition Out-Of-Range
    • Faulty PCM

    Turn ignition off. Ensure scan tool is connected to DLC. Turn ignition on. Ensure accelerator pedal is released. Using scan tool, access ETC PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. If ETC PID reading indicates ON, leave scan tool in PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD mode and go to step  19). If ETC PID reading indicates OFF, go to next step.

  16. 14) Check ETC Transition Voltage

    Observe ETC (voltage) and ETC (state) PID reading and slowly depress accelerator pedal. If ETC PID reading switches to ON at .4-1.6 volts, clear DTCs and retest. If DTC resets, replace PCM. If ETC PID does not switch to ON at .4-1.6 volts, go to next step.
  17. 15) Check ETC Sensor

    Observe ETC PID reading and fully depress accelerator pedal. If ETC PID reading switches to ON at any time, replace accelerator pedal assembly. Clear DTCs and retest. If ETC PID does not switch to ON at any time, go to next step.
  18. 16) Check ETC Sensor Resistance

    Turn ignition off. Disconnect ETC sensor. ETC sensor is mounted above accelerator pedal and has a 10-pin connector. Inspect ETC sensor connector for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. Repair connector as necessary. With accelerator pedal depressed, measure resistance between IGN PWR circuit and IVS circuit at ETC sensor connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, ETC sensor is defective. Replace accelerator assembly. Clear DTCs and retest.
  19. 17) Check IGN PWR Circuit For Open

    Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, measure voltage between chassis ground and IGN PWR circuit at ETC sensor harness connector. See Figure. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, replace fuse or repair open circuit between central junction box and ETC sensor. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Clear DTCs and retest.
  20. 18) Check SIG RTN Circuit For Open

    Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connector and inspect for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. PCM is located in left rear of engine compartment, near brake master cylinder. Repair connector as necessary. Install Rotunda Breakout Box (014-00950), leaving PCM disconnected. Using DVOM, measure resistance of IVS circuit (Red/Light Green wire) between terminal No. 7 at ETC sensor wiring harness and test pin No. 10 at breakout box. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace PCM. Clear DTCs and retest. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Red/Light Green wire between PCM and ETC sensor. Clear DTCs and retest.
  21. 19) Check IVS Circuit For Short To Power

    Disconnect ETC sensor connector. ETC sensor is mounted above accelerator pedal and has a 10-pin connector. If ETC PID reading indicates OFF, replace accelerator pedal assembly. Clear DTCs and retest. If ETC PID indicates ON, locate and repair short to voltage in Red/Light Green wire between PCM and ETC sensor. Clear DTCs and retest.
