Test FG: Speed Control Command Switch: Testing

- 1) DTC P0565, P0566, P0567, P0568 Or P0569: Check SCCS PID
DTC P0565, P0566, P0567, P0568 or P0569 will set if PCM does not detect when a switch has been pressed during KOER SWITCH SELF-TEST. Possible causes are:- Switch Not Depressed During Test
- Faulty Speed Control Switch
- SCCS Circuit Open, Shorted To Ground Or Power
- Open Or Short In SC GND Circuit
- Open In Power Supply Circuit
Ensure scan tool is connected to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, access SCCS PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. DO NOT depress any switches. If SCCS PID voltage is 10 volts, go to step 5). If SCCS PID voltage is zero volt, go to step 8). If SCCS PID voltage is 6.58-6.78 volts, leave ignition on, scan tool in PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD mode and go to next step.
- 2) ON Switch Function Check
Depress speed control ON switch. If SCCS PID voltage is 10 volts, go to next step. If SCCS PID voltage is not 10 volts, go to step 11) (Econoline, Excursion and F250-550), or step 12) (F650-750). - 3) OFF Switch Function Check
Depress speed control OFF switch. If SCCS PID voltage is zero volts, leave ignition on, scan tool in PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD mode and go to next step. If SCCS PID voltage is not zero volts, go to step 17). - 4) Command Switches Function
Using scan tool, access SCCS M PID. Monitor SCCS M PID voltages while depressing speed control RESUME, COAST and SET/ACCEL switches one at a time. Compare PID voltages to specifications. See SCCS M PID SPECIFICATIONS table. If all SCCS M PID voltage readings are within plus or minus .2 volt of specification, repeat KOER SWITCH SELF-TEST under QUICK TEST. If DTC is still present, replace PCM. Clear DTCs and retest. If any SCCS PID voltage reading is not within plus or minus .2 volt of specification, replace speed control switch assembly. Remove horn pad or driver-side air bag module, if equipped. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS. Disconnect speed control switch connector. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, access SCCS PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. Recheck SCCS PID voltage. If SCCS PID voltage is 6.58-6.78 volts, replace speed control switch assembly. Clear DTCs and retest. If SCCS PID voltage is still 10 volts, leave ignition on, scan tool in PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD mode and go to next step. - 6) Check Clockspring For Short To Power
Disconnect clockspring-to-steering column 6-pin connector. Connector is located below steering column. If SCCS PID voltage is 6.58-6.78 volts, replace clockspring. Clear DTCs and retest. If SCCS PID voltage is still 10 volts, go to next step. - 7) Check Signal Circuit For Short To Power
Turn ignition off. Ensure steering column and speed control switch connectors are disconnected. Disconnect PCM connector and inspect for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. PCM is located in left rear of engine compartment, near brake master cylinder. Repair connector as necessary. Install Rotunda Breakout Box (014-00950), leaving PCM disconnected. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, measure voltage between chassis ground and test pin No. 61 at breakout box. If SCCS PID voltage is zero volts, replace PCM. Clear DTCs and retest. If SCCS PID voltage is still 10 volts, locate and repair short to voltage in Light Blue/Black wire between PCM and clockspring-to-steering column 6-pin connector. Clear DTCs and retest. - 8) Check Command Switch For Short To Ground
Remove horn pad or driver-side air bag module, if equipped. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS. Disconnect speed control switch connector. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, access SCCS PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. Recheck SCCS PID voltage. If SCCS PID voltage is 6.58-6.78 volts, replace speed control switch assembly. Clear DTCs and retest. If SCCS PID voltage is still zero volt, go to next step. - 9) Check Clockspring For Short To Ground
Disconnect clockspring-to-steering column 6-pin connector. Connector is located below steering column. If SCCS PID voltage is 6.58-6.78 volts, replace clockspring. Clear DTCs and retest. If SCCS PID voltage is still zero volt, go to next step. - 10) Check Signal Circuit For Short To Ground
Turn ignition off. Ensure clockspring-to-steering column 6-pin connector is disconnected. Disconnect PCM connector and inspect for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. PCM is located in left rear of engine compartment, near brake master cylinder. Repair connector as necessary. Install Rotunda Breakout Box (014-00950), leaving PCM disconnected. Using DVOM, measure resistance between test pin No. 61 and test pins No. 25, 51, 76 (Econoline), 77 and 103 at breakout box. If each resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace PCM. Clear DTCs and retest. If any resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, locate and repair short to ground in Light Blue/Black wire. Clear DTCs and retest. - 11) Check Fuse
Turn ignition off. On Econoline, remove and inspect fuse No. 27 (15-amp) from battery junction box. Battery junction box is located on left front of engine compartment. On Excursion and F250-550, remove fuse No. 37 (15-amp) from central junction box. Central junction box is located behind lower left side of instrument panel. On all models, if fuse is okay, reinstall fuse and go to next step. On all models, if fuse is blown, replace fuse. Clear DTCs and retest. - 12) Check Power Circuit To Horn Switch
On Econoline, remove HORN relay from battery junction box. Battery junction box is located on left front of engine compartment. On Excursion and F250-750, remove HORN relay from central junction box. Central junction box is located behind lower left side of instrument panel. Remove horn pad or driver-side air bag module, if equipped. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS. Disconnect speed control switch 5-pin connector. Using DVOM, measure resistance of Dark Blue wire between terminal "C" at clockspring side of 5-pin connector and HORN relay cavity No. 86. See Figure-Figure . If resistance is less than 75 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 75 ohms or more, go to step 16). - 13) Check Speed Control Switch
Ensure ignition is off. Depress speed control ON switch. Using DVOM, measure resistance between terminal "A" and "C" at speed control switch connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace speed control switch assembly. Clear DTCs and retest. - 14) Check Circuit No. 151 For Open
Turn ignition off. Disconnect clockspring-to-steering column 6-pin connector. Connector is located below steering column. Disconnect PCM connector and inspect for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. PCM is located in left rear of engine compartment, near brake master cylinder. Repair connector as necessary. Install Rotunda Breakout Box (014-00950), leaving PCM disconnected. Using DVOM, measure resistance of Light Blue/Black wire between test pin No. 61 at breakout box and terminal No. 6 at clockspring-to-steering column 6-pin vehicle harness connector. See Figure-Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Light Blue/Black wire. Clear DTCs and retest. - 15) Check Clockspring For Open Circuit
Check clockspring internal circuit. Using DVOM, measure resistance between terminal "C" at clockspring side of speed control switch 5-pin connector and terminal No. 5 at clockspring-to-steering column 6-pin connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace PCM. Clear DTCs and retest. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace clockspring assembly. Clear DTCs and retest. - 16) Check Clockspring For Open Circuit
Check clockspring internal circuit. Using DVOM, measure resistance between terminal "C" at clockspring side of speed control switch 5-pin connector and terminal No. 5 at clockspring-to-steering column 6-pin connector. See Figure-Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, check for the following:- Open in Dark Blue wire between HORN relay and clockspring 6-pin connector (all models).
- Open power feed circuit (Yellow/Light Blue wire) to HORN relay cavity No. 30 (Econoline and F650-750).
- Faulty HORN relay (all models).
- Faulty central junction box circuit between HORN relay and fuse No. 37 (Excursion and F250-550).
Repair as necessary. Clear DTCs and retest. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace clockspring assembly. Clear DTCs and retest.
- 17) Check Ground At Switch
Remove horn pad or driver-side air bag module, if equipped. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS. Disconnect speed control switch 5-pin harness connector. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, check for battery voltage between terminal "B" and "C" at clockspring side of speed control switch connector. See Figure-Figure . If battery voltage is not present, go to next step. If battery voltage is present, replace speed control switch assembly. Clear DTCs and retest. - 18) Check Clockspring For Open Circuit
Check clockspring internal circuit. Using DVOM, measure resistance between terminal "B" at clockspring side of speed control switch 5-pin connector and terminal No. 3 at clockspring-to-steering column 6-pin connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace clockspring assembly. Clear DTCs and retest. - 19) Check Signal Circuit For Open
Turn ignition off. Ensure clockspring-to-steering column 6-pin connector is disconnected. Disconnect PCM connector and inspect for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. PCM is located in left rear of engine compartment, near brake master cylinder. Repair connector as necessary. Install Rotunda Breakout Box (014-00950), leaving PCM disconnected. Using DVOM, measure resistance of Gray/Red wire between terminal No. 3 at clockspring-to-steering column 6-pin harness connector and test pin No. 91 at breakout box. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace PCM. Clear DTCs and retest. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, locate and repair open in Gray/Red wire between PCM and clockspring harness connector. Clear DTCs and retest.

When performing KOER SWITCH TEST, wait 5 seconds after pressing "Trigger" to start test before running through driver operated controls. Test may take up to 5 minutes to complete.
