(1) MIL illuminates when fault is detected in second drive cycle (California, OBD-II calibration).

(2) MIL illuminates when fault is present (Federal).

(3) Idle validation switch has a 2-pin connector.
NOTE: For additional testing information, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
NOTE: Idle Validation Switch (IVS) is not serviced separately. If IVS is defective, accelerator pedal assembly must be replaced. Ensure vehicle is equipped with an IVS and not an Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) sensor. IVS has a 2-pin connector and ETC sensor has a 10-pin connector. If vehicle is equipped with an ETC sensor, do not perform this test. Go to TEST QC, step  13).
NOTE: When performing KOER SWITCH TEST, wait 5 seconds after pressing "Trigger" to start test before running through driver operated controls. Test may take up to 5 minutes to complete.

  1. 1) KOER DTC P0220 Or P0221: Check IVS PID
DTC P0220 indicates a malfunction has occurred in IVS circuit. DTC P0221 indicates a performance concern has occurred in IVS circuit. Possible causes are:
    • Faulty Accelerator Pedal Assembly
    • Open Circuit
    • Short To Voltage In IVS Circuit
    • Faulty PCM

Ensure scan tool is connected to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, access AP and IVS PIDs from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. With accelerator pedal released, IVS PID should read OFF. If IVS PID reading indicates ON, go to step  7). If IVS PID reading indicates OFF, go to next step.

  2. 2) Check IVS Transition Voltage

Observe AP (voltage) and IVS (state) PID reading and slowly apply accelerator pedal. If IVS PID does not cycle from OFF to ON at .4-1.6 volts, go to next step. If IVS PID reading cycles from OFF to ON at .4-1.6 volts, clear DTCs and retest. If DTC resets, replace PCM.
  3. 3) Check IVS

Observe IVS PID reading while slowly applying accelerator pedal fully. If IVS PID reading cycles to ON at any time during pedal travel, replace accelerator pedal assembly. Clear DTCs and retest. If IVS PID does not cycle to ON at any time during pedal travel, go to next step.
  4. 4) Check IVS Resistance

Turn ignition off. Disconnect IVS connector. See Figure. Inspect IVS connector for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. Repair connector as necessary. Apply accelerator pedal fully. Using DVOM, measure resistance between IVS terminals. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace accelerator assembly. Clear DTCs and retest.
  5. 5) Check IVS Power Feed Circuit

Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, check for battery voltage between chassis ground and Red/Light Green wire (Econoline) or Violet wire (F650-750) at IVS harness connector terminal No. 2. See Figure. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, replace IVS PWR fuse or repair open circuit between central junction box and IVS.
  6. 6) Check IVS SIG RTN Circuit

Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connector and inspect for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. PCM is located in left rear of engine compartment, near brake master cylinder. Repair connector as necessary. Install Rotunda Breakout Box (014-00950), leaving PCM disconnected. Using DVOM, measure resistance of SIG RTN circuit (Red/Orange wire on Econoline or Red/Light Green wire on F650-750) between IVS harness connector and test pin No. 10 at breakout box. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace PCM. Clear DTCs and retest. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in SIG RTN circuit between PCM and IVS. Clear DTCs and retest.
  7. 7) Check SIG RTN Circuit For Short To Voltage

Disconnect IVS connector. See Figure. If IVS PID indicates OFF, replace accelerator pedal assembly. Clear DTCs and retest. If IVS PID indicates ON, repair short to voltage in SIG RTN circuit (Red/Orange wire on Econoline or Red/Light Green wire on F650-750) between PCM and IVS. Clear DTCs and retest.
