Test DJ: Water In Fuel Sensor: Testing

FAULT CODE SETTING CONDITION

Fault Code KOEO KOER Continuous Memory
P1140     Test DJ  , Step  1)
    NOTE: For additional testing information, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .

  1. 1) Continuous Memory DTC P1140: Check For Fuel Contaminants
    DTC P1140 indicates PCM detected water in fuel filter housing or a short to ground in monitoring circuit. The following are possible causes for this fault:
    • WIF Filter Housing
    • WIF Signal Circuit Shorted To Ground
    • Faulty WIF Sensor
    • Faulty PCM

    Using a spare piece of hose, connect one end of hose to water drain tube at bottom of fuel filter housing. Fuel filter is located on top of engine. Place other end of hose into a suitable one quart container. Start engine. Open drain valve at bottom of fuel filter housing. Fill container with fuel and close drain valve. Check fuel in container. If no water or other contaminants are present, go to next step. If water or other contaminants are present, clear DTCs. Start engine and recheck for DTCs. If WIF indicator light turns on and DTC P1140 resets, repeat this test step. If water or other contaminants are still present, flush and clean fuel tank and fuel system.

  2. 2) Check WIF Sensor For Short To Ground

    Turn ignition on. Disconnect WIF sensor connector. WIF sensor is located on top left of engine and has a 2-pin connector with Gray/Red and Red/Light Green wires. Clear DTCs. Cycle ignition switch. Retrieve DTCs. If DTC P1140 is present, go to next step. If P1140 is not present, go to step  4).
  3. 3) Check WIF Signal Circuit For Short To Ground

    Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connector and inspect for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. PCM is located in left rear of engine compartment, near brake master cylinder. Repair connector as necessary. Using DVOM, measure resistance between chassis ground and Gray/Red wire at WIF sensor harness connector. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace PCM. Clear DTCs and retest. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Gray/Red wire between PCM and WIF sensor. Clear DTCs and retest.
  4. 4) Check WIF Sensor

    Remove fuel filter. Visually inspect inside of filter housing for debris. If any debris is present, clean filter housing. Remove WIF sensor. Clean and reinstall sensor. Clear DTCs and retest. If no debris is present, replace WIF sensor. Clear DTCs and retest.
