Test DA: Intake Air Temperature Sensor: Testing

- 1) DTC P0113
DTC P0113 is set when IAT sensor signal voltage is out of range (high). Possible causes are:- Open In Harness
- Faulty IAT Sensor
- Faulty Harness Connector
- Faulty PCM
Ensure scan tool is connected to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, access IAT V PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. If voltage is 4.95 volts or more, go to next step. If voltage is less than 4.95 volts, go to step 8).
- 2) Induce Opposite Failure
Disconnect IAT sensor connector. IAT sensor is located under air filter housing. Connect a jumper wire between battery negative terminal and IAT sensor harness connector terminal No. 2 (Gray/Red wire). See Figure. Turn ignition off. If IAT V PID reading is more than zero volt, go to step 4). If IAT V PID reading is zero volts, go to next step. - 3) Check SIG RTN Circuit
Disconnect jumper wire. Using DVOM, measure resistance between chassis ground and IAT sensor harness connector terminal No. 2 (Gray/Red wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace IAT sensor. Clear DTCs and retest. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, locate and repair open in Gray/Red wire. Clear DTCs and retest. - 4) Check Continuity Of Sensor Signal Circuit
Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connector and inspect for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. PCM is located in left rear of engine compartment, near brake master cylinder. Repair connector as necessary. Install Rotunda Breakout Box (014-00950), leaving PCM disconnected. Using DVOM, measure resistance between IAT sensor harness connector terminal No. 1 (Gray wire) and test pin No. 39 at breakout box. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace PCM. Clear DTCs and retest. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, locate and repair open in Gray wire. Clear DTCs and retest. - 5) KOEO DTC P0112
DTC P0112 is set when IAT sensor signal is out of range (low). The following are possible causes for this fault:- Circuit Grounded In Wiring Harness
- Faulty Sensor
- Faulty Harness Connector
- Faulty PCM
Ensure scan tool is connected to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, access IAT V PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. If IAT V PID reading is .13 volt or less, go to next step. If IAT V PID reading is more than .13 volt, go to step 8).
- 6) Induce Opposite Failure
Observe scan tool and disconnect IAT sensor connector. IAT sensor is located under air filter housing. If IAT V PID reading goes to 4.59 volts or more, replace IAT sensor. Clear DTCs and retest. If IAT V PID reading stays less than 4.59 volts, go to next step. - 7) Check IAT Sensor Signal Circuit For Short To Ground
Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connector and inspect for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. PCM is located in left rear of engine compartment, near brake master cylinder. Repair connector as necessary. Install Rotunda Breakout Box (014-00950), leaving PCM disconnected. Using DVOM, measure resistance between test pin No. 39 and test pins No. 51, 76 (Econoline), 77, 91 and 103 at breakout box. If all resistances are more than 10 k/ohms, replace PCM. Clear DTCs and retest. If any resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, locate and repair short to ground in Gray wire. Clear DTCs and retest. - 8) Continuous Memory DTC P0112 Or P1113: Check Sensor
DTCs P0112 and/or P0113 are set when IAT sensor signal circuit was out of range (low or high). These DTCs are generated under normal driving conditions. The following are possible causes for these faults:- Faulty Sensor
- Open Or Grounded Circuit In Harness
- Faulty PCM
Ensure scan tool is connected to DLC. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, access IAT V PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. While observing scan tool, tap on sensor to simulate road shock. Wiggle sensor connector. If no change in IAT V PID reading occurs, go to next step. If any change in IAT V PID reading occurs, replace IAT sensor. Clear DTCs and retest.
- 9) Check Wiring Harness
While observing IAT V PID, wiggle, bend and shake small sections of wiring harness starting at IAT sensor and working toward PCM. If IAT V PID reading fluctuates, isolate fault and repair as necessary. If IAT V PID reading does not fluctuate, go to next step. - 10) Inspect PCM & Wiring Harness Connectors
Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connector and IAT sensor connector. Inspect connectors for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. If connectors and terminals are damaged, repair as necessary. Clear DTCs and retest. If connectors and terminals are okay, fault cannot be duplicated at this time and testing is complete. Clear DTCs and retest.
