Test KD: Glow Plug Light: Testing

(1) MIL illuminates when fault is detected in second drive cycle (California, OBD-II calibration).
WARNING: Red-striped wires carry 115 volts DC. Severe electrical shock may be received. DO NOT pierce engine electrical wires or damage to harness may occur.
    NOTE: For additional testing information, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
    NOTE: For Econoline and F650-750 models, go directly to step  3).

  1. 1) DTC P0381: Check GPL Operation
    DTC P0381 indicates PCM has detected a glow plug indicator circuit malfunction. Possible causes are:
    • Faulty Glow Plug Indicator
    • Faulty Instrument Cluster
    • Faulty PCM

    Turn ignition on and observe GPL. If GPL illuminates for 1-10 seconds then turns off, clear DTCs and retest. If DTC P0381 resets, diagnose instrument cluster. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If GPL does not illuminate for 1-10 seconds then turn off, go to next step.

  2. 2) Repeat KOEO Self-Test

    Cycle ignition off, then on. Perform KOEO ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST  under QUICK TEST. Retrieve DTCs. If KOEO DTC P0381 is present, diagnose instrument cluster. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If KOEO DTC P0381 is not present, fault is intermittent. Restore vehicle.
  3. WARNING: Red-striped wires carry 115 volts DC. Severe electrical shock may be received. DO NOT pierce engine electrical wires or damage to harness may occur.
    NOTE: For additional testing information, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .

  4. 3) KOEO & Continuous Memory DTC P0381: Check WAIT TO START Indicator Operation
    DTC P0381 indicates PCM has detected a WAIT TO START indicator circuit malfunction. Possible causes are:
    • Faulty WAIT TO START Indicator
    • Open Or Short To Ground in WTSL Signal Circuit
    • Open Or Short To Ground in WTSL PWR Circuit
    • Blown WAIT TO START Indicator Fuse
    • Faulty PCM

    Start engine and observe WAIT TO START light. If light remains on after engine start-up, go to next step. If light goes off after engine start-up, go to step  5).

  5. 4) Check WTSL Signal Circuit For Short To Ground

    Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connector. PCM is located in left rear of engine compartment, near brake master cylinder. Turn ignition on. If WAIT TO START light remains illuminated, repair short to ground in WTSL signal circuit (Black/Pink wire) between PCM and instrument cluster. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If WAIT TO START light does not illuminate, replace PCM. Clear DTCs and retest.
  6. 5) Check For Intermittent DTC P0381

    Turn ignition on. Observe WAIT TO START light. Wait 5 seconds, then turn ignition off. If WAIT TO START light does not illuminate at all, go to next step. If WAIT TO START light illuminates for at least one second, concern is intermittent. Go to step  11).
  7. 6) Check WAIT TO START Light PWR Fuse

    Turn ignition off. Remove and inspect fuse No. 2 (Econoline) or fuse No. 29 (F650-750) from central junction box. Central junction box is located behind lower left side of instrument panel. If fuse is okay, reinstall fuse and go to next step. If fuse is blown, leave fuse removed and go to step  8).
  8. 7) Check WAIT TO START Light Bulb

    Remove and inspect WAIT TO START bulb. If bulb is okay, go to step  9). If bulb is bad, replace bulb. Clear DTCs and retest.
  9. 8) Check WTSL PWR Circuit For Short To Ground

    Remove WAIT TO START bulb. Using DVOM, measure resistance between chassis ground and WTSL PWR circuit (Red/Yellow wire) at WAIT TO START bulb socket. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, circuit is okay. Replace fuse. Clear DTCs and retest. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, locate and repair short to ground in Red/Yellow wire. Replace fuse, clear DTCs and retest.
  10. 9) Check WTSL PWR Circuit For Open

    Access instrument cluster connectors. Remove WAIT TO START light. Turn ignition on. On Econoline, check for battery voltage between chassis ground and terminal No. 11 (Red/Yellow wire) at instrument cluster White 16-pin connector. On F650-750, check for battery voltage between chassis ground and terminal No. 12 (Red/Yellow wire) at instrument cluster 12-pin connector. See Figure or Figure . On all models, if battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, locate and repair open in WTSL PWR circuit (Red/Yellow wire) between fuse in central junction box and instrument cluster connector.
  11. 10) Check WTSL Signal Circuit For Open

    Disconnect PCM connector and inspect for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. PCM is located in left rear of engine compartment, near brake master cylinder. Repair connector as necessary. Install Rotunda Breakout Box (014-00950), leaving PCM disconnected. Using DVOM, measure resistance of WTSL signal circuit (Black/Pink wire) between test pin No. 70 at breakout box and instrument cluster Black 12-pin connector terminal No. 11 (Econoline), or terminal No. 2 (F650-750). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace PCM. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black/Pink wire between PCM and instrument cluster connector.
  12. WARNING: Red-striped wires carry 115 volts DC. Severe electrical shock may be received. DO NOT pierce engine electrical wires or damage to harness may occur.
    NOTE: For additional testing information, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .

  13. 11) Continuous Memory DTC P0381: Clear DTCs & Road Test
    Clear DTCs. Road test vehicle. Retrieve Continuous Memory DTCs. If Continuous Memory DTC P0381 is present, go to next step. If Continuous Memory DTC P0381 is not present, DTC was not cleared after a previous repair. Testing is complete.
  14. 12) Check For WAIT TO START Light Flicker

    If WAIT TO START light came on or flickered on and off during road test in step 11)  , locate and repair intermittent short to ground in Black/Pink wire between WAIT TO START light and PCM. Clear DTCs and retest. If WAIT TO START light did not come on or flicker on and off during road test, go to next step.
  15. 13) Check For Intermittent Open Circuit

    Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connector and inspect for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. PCM is located in left rear of engine compartment, near brake master cylinder. Repair connector as necessary. Install Rotunda Breakout Box (014-00950), leaving PCM disconnected. Connect jumper wire between chassis ground and test pin No. 70 at breakout box. WAIT TO START light should be illuminated. Observe WAIT TO START light and tap on instrument panel. Wiggle and bend small sections of wiring harness starting at engine compartment 76-pin bulkhead connector and working toward PCM. If WAIT TO START light flickers off and on, locate and repair intermittent open circuit in wiring harness. Clear DTCs and retest. If WAIT TO START light does not flicker off and on, intermittent open or short cannot be located at this time. Replace PCM and retest.
