Test Dm: Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (Manual Transmissions Only): Testing

- 1) KOEO DTC P1117: Induce Opposite DTC P0118
DTC P0117 indicates ECT sensor is out of range low. Possible causes for this fault are:- ECT Signal Circuit Shorted To Ground
- Faulty Harness Connector
- Faulty ECT Sensor
- Faulty PCM
Disconnect ECT sensor connector. Sensor is located in top of water pump assembly. Perform KOEO ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST under QUICK TEST. If DTC P0118 is not present, go to next step. If DTC P0118 is present, replace ECT sensor. Clear DTCS and retest.
- 2) Check ECT Signal Circuit For Short To Ground
Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connector and inspect for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. PCM is located in left rear of engine compartment, near brake master cylinder. Repair connector as necessary. Leave PCM disconnected. Using DVOM, measure resistance between chassis ground and ECT sensor harness connector terminal No. 2 (Orange/Black wire). See Figure. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace PCM. Clear DTCs and retest. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Orange/Black wire between ECT sensor and PCM. Clear DTCs and retest. - 3) KOEO DTC P0118: Check SIG RTN Circuit For Open
DTC P0118 indicates ECT sensor is out of range high. Possible causes for this fault are:- ECT Signal Circuit Open Or Shorted To PWR
- SIG RTN Circuit Open
- Faulty ECT Sensor
- Faulty Harness Connector
- Faulty PCM
Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECT sensor connector. Sensor is located in top of water pump assembly. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, measure resistance between chassis ground and ECT sensor harness connector terminal No. 1 (Gray/Red wire). See Figure. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in SIG RTN circuit (Gray/Red wire) between PCM and ECT sensor. Clear DTCs and retest.
- 4) Induce Opposite Failure
Ensure ignition is on. Connect a jumper wire between ECT sensor harness connector terminals. Perform KOEO ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST under QUICK TEST. If DTC P0117 is not present, disconnect jumper wire and go to next step. If DTC P0117 is present, replace ECT sensor. Clear DTCs and retest. - 5) Check ECT Signal Circuit For Short To Power
Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connector and inspect for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. PCM is located in left rear of engine compartment, near brake master cylinder. Repair connector as necessary. Install Rotunda Breakout Box (014-00950), leaving PCM disconnected. Using DVOM, measure resistance between test pin No. 37 and test pins No. 55, 71, 91 and 97 at breakout box. If each resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If any resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair ECT signal circuit (Orange/Black wire) for short to PWR or VREF between PCM and ECT sensor. Clear DTCs and retest.NOTE: A break in step numbering sequence occurs at this point. Procedure skips from step 5) to step 7). No test procedures have been omitted. - 7) Check ECT Signal Circuit For Open
Ensure ignition is off. Using DVOM, measure resistance of Orange/Black wire between ECT sensor harness connector terminal No. 2 and test pin No. 37 at breakout box. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace PCM. Clear DTCs and retest. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Orange/Black wire between PCM and ECT sensor. Clear DTCs and retest. - 8) Continuous Memory DTC P0117: Perform KOEO Self-Test
DTC P0117 indicates ECT sensor out of range low was detected and DTC was set during normal driving conditions. Possible causes for this fault are:- ECT Signal Circuit Shorted To Ground
- Faulty Harness Connector
- Faulty ECT Sensor
- Faulty PCM
Turn ignition on. Perform KOEO ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST under QUICK TEST. If KOEO DTC P0117 is present, go to step 1). If KOEO DTC P0117 is not present, go to next step.
- 9) Intermittent Circuit Failure Check: DTC P0117
Clear Continuous Memory DTCs. Turn ignition on. Wiggle and bend small sections of wiring harness starting at ECT sensor and working toward PCM. Sensor is located in top of water pump assembly. PCM is located in left rear of engine compartment, near brake master cylinder. Recheck DTCs. If Continuous Memory DTC P0117 is not present, go to next step. If Continuous Memory DTC P0117 is present, isolate fault and repair wiring as necessary. Clear DTCs and retest. - 10) Intermittent ECT Sensor Check
Ensure ignition is on. Lightly tap on ECT sensor to simulate road shock. Wiggle sensor connector. Recheck Continuous Memory DTCs. If Continuous Memory DTC P0117 is not present, no concern is indicated at this time. Testing is complete. If Continuous Memory DTC P0117 is present, replace ECT sensor. Check ECT sensor harness connector for damaged pins. Repair as necessary. Clear DTCs and retest. - 11) Continuous Memory DTC P0118: Perform KOEO Self-Test
DTC P0118 indicates ECT sensor out of range high was detected and DTC was set during normal driving conditions. Possible causes for this fault are:- ECT Signal Circuit Open Or Shorted To PWR
- SIG RTN Circuit Open
- Faulty ECT Sensor
- Faulty Harness Connector
- Faulty PCM
Turn ignition on. Perform KOEO ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST under QUICK TEST. If KOEO DTC P0118 is present, go to step 3). If KOEO DTC P0118 is not present, go to next step.
- 12) Intermittent Circuit Failure Check: DTC P0118
Clear Continuous Memory DTCs. Turn ignition on. Wiggle and bend small sections of wiring harness starting at ECT sensor and working toward PCM. Sensor is located in top of water pump assembly. PCM is located in left rear of engine compartment, near brake master cylinder. Recheck Continuous Memory DTCs. If Continuous Memory DTC P0118 is not present, go to next step. If Continuous Memory DTC P0118 is present, isolate fault and repair wiring as necessary. Clear DTCs and retest. - 13) Intermittent ECT Sensor Check
Turn ignition on. Lightly tap on ECT sensor to simulate road shock. Wiggle sensor connector. Recheck Continuous Memory DTCs. If Continuous Memory DTC P0118 is not present, no concern is indicated at this time. Testing is complete. If Continuous Memory DTC P0118 is present, isolate fault and repair wiring as necessary. Clear DTCs and retest.
