NOTE:
Accelerator Pedal (AP) sensor is not serviced separately. If AP sensor is defective, accelerator pedal assembly must be replaced. Ensure vehicle is equipped with an AP sensor and not an Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) sensor. AP sensor has a 3-pin connector and ETC sensor has a 10-pin connector. See Figure. If vehicle is equipped with an ETC sensor, DO NOT perform this test. Go to TEST QC: ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL .
- 1) KOEO & Continuous Memory DTC P0123: Check AP PID
DTC P0123 is set when PCM detects AP sensor circuit input high. The following are possible causes for this fault:
- Damaged Accelerator Pedal Assembly
- AP Sensor Not Installed Properly
- Faulty AP Sensor
- Short To PWR In Wiring Harness
- Faulty PCM
Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, access AP PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. Slowly depress accelerator pedal while observing scan tool. If voltage reading changes to more than 4.5 volts, leave scan tool in PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD mode and go to next step. If voltage reading does not change to more than 4.5 volts, fault cannot be duplicated at this time. Clear DTCs and retest.
- 2) Induce Opposite Failure
Continue to monitor AP PID voltage on scan tool and disconnect AP sensor connector. AP sensor is mounted above accelerator pedal. See Figure. Inspect connector for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. Repair as necessary. If AP PID voltage reading changes from more than 4.5 volts to zero volt when connector is disconnected, AP circuit is okay. Replace accelerator pedal assembly. Clear DTCs and retest. If voltage reading does not change from more than 4.5 volts to zero volt when connector is disconnected, go to next step.
- 3) Check AP Sensor Signal Wire
Ensure AP sensor is disconnected. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, measure voltage between chassis ground and AP sensor harness connector terminal No. 2 (Gray/White wire). See Figure. If voltage is more than 4.5 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 4.5 volts or less, replace PCM. Clear DTCs and retest.
- 4) Check AP Circuit For Short To Voltage
Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connector and inspect for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. PCM is located in left rear of engine compartment, near brake master cylinder. Repair connector as necessary. Install Rotunda Breakout Box (014-00950), leaving PCM disconnected. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, check for voltage between chassis ground and test pin No. 89 at breakout box. If voltage is present, locate and repair short to voltage in Gray/White wire between PCM and AP sensor. Clear DTCs and retest. If voltage is not present, replace PCM. Clear DTCs and retest.
- 5) KOEO & Continuous Memory DTC P0122
DTC P0122 is set when PCM detects AP sensor circuit input low. The following are possible causes for this fault:
- AP Sensor Not Installed Properly
- Faulty AP Sensor
- Grounded Or Open Wiring Harness
- Faulty Powertrain Control Module (PCM)
Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, access AP PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. Slowly depress accelerator pedal while observing scan tool. If voltage reading changes to less than .37 volt, leave scan tool in PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD mode and go to next step. If voltage reading does not change to less than .37 volt, fault cannot be duplicated at this time. Clear DTCs and retest.
- 6) Induce Opposite Failure
Disconnect AP sensor connector. AP sensor is mounted above accelerator pedal. Turn ignition on. Continue to monitor AP PID voltage on scan tool. Connect a jumper wire between AP sensor harness connector VREF terminal No. 3 (Brown/White wire) and AP signal terminal No. 2 (Gray/White wire). See Figure. If voltage reading changes to more than 4.5 volts with jumper connected, circuits are okay. Replace accelerator pedal assembly. Clear DTCs and retest. If voltage reading does not change to more than 4.5 volts with jumper connected, disconnect jumper wire and go to next step.
- 7) Check VREF Circuit Voltage
Ensure ignition is on. Using DVOM, measure voltage between chassis ground and AP sensor harness connector VREF terminal No. 3 (Brown/White wire). If voltage is 4.5-5.5 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not 4.5-5.5 volts, locate and repair open in Brown/White wire between PCM and AP sensor. Clear DTCs and retest.
- 8) Check AP GND Circuit
Turn ignition off. Using DVOM, measure resistance between chassis ground and AP sensor harness connector terminal No. 1 (Yellow/Black wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Yellow/Black wire between PCM and AP sensor. Clear DTCs and retest.
- 9) Check AP Signal Circuit Continuity
Disconnect PCM connector and inspect for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. PCM is located in left rear of engine compartment, near brake master cylinder. Repair connector as necessary. Install Rotunda Breakout Box (014-00950), leaving PCM disconnected. Using DVOM, measure resistance of Gray/White wire between AP sensor harness connector terminal No. 2 and test pin No. 89 at breakout box. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, locate and repair open in Gray/White wire between PCM and AP sensor. Clear DTCs and retest.
- 10) Check AP Signal Circuit For Short To Ground
Turn ignition off. Ensure AP sensor is disconnected. Using DVOM, measure resistance between test pin No. 89 and test pins No. 51, 76, 77, 91 and 103 at breakout box. If each resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If any resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, locate and repair short to ground in AP signal circuit (Gray/White wire). Clear DTCs and retest.
- 11) Check VREF Circuit Continuity
Using a DVOM, measure resistance of Brown/White wire between AP sensor harness connector terminal No. 3 and test pin No. 90 at breakout box. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Brown/White wire between PCM and AP sensor. Clear DTCs and retest.
- 12) Check AP GND Circuit Continuity
Using a DVOM, measure resistance of Yellow/Black wire between AP sensor harness connector terminal No. 1 and test pin No. 24 at breakout box. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace PCM. Clear DTCs and retest. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Yellow/Black wire between PCM and AP sensor. Clear DTCs and retest.
