Cylinder Head: Disassembly

Both cylinder heads 

  1. Remove the Cylinder Head Lifting Bracket from the cylinder head(s).

    LH cylinder head 

  2. Remove the 2 nuts and separate the EGR cooler clamps. Remove the horizontal EGR cooler.
    • Discard the nuts.
  3. Remove the 8 bolts, EGR cooler bracket, exhaust manifold and exhaust manifold gasket.
    • Discard the bolts and exhaust manifold gasket.
  4. Remove the 2 pins from the back of the horizontal EGR cooler bracket. Remove and discard the EGR cooler clamps.

    RH cylinder head 

  5. Remove the Front End Accessory Drive (FEAD) studs.

  6. Remove the 3 bolts, nut and heat shield.
  7. Remove the 3 spacers.
  8. Remove the 4 stud bolts, 4 bolts, exhaust manifold and exhaust manifold gasket.
    • Discard the stud bolts, bolts and exhaust manifold gasket.

    Both cylinder heads 

  9. Install the valve spring compressor.

  10. Remove the valve stem keys.
  11. Remove the valve spring compressor.
  12. Remove the valve spring retainer.
  13. Remove the valve spring.
  14. NOTE: It may be necessary to file the tip of the valve to aid in removal of the valve from the cylinder head.
  15. Remove the valve.
  16. Remove the valve seal assembly.
  17. Clean and inspect the valves, valve guides and valve seats. Replace components that are damaged or out of specification.
